looking for a good back doctor in the local Ashburn area. I have been having trouble with sciatica and someone suggested I see one.

There are two chiropractors who advertise in the Broadlands newsletter. One is Advanced Chiropractic, coupon on page 16 of the June issue ( http://hoa.broadlands.org/newsletter/2005/06.pdf ) and the other is Dr. Steve Dowell at Lighthouse Chiropractic, which is located on the upper level of the shopping center at the corner of Truro Parish and Chickacoan Trail Dr.

I would rather go to someone that is a referral - I have been told that if you go with a bad chiropractor that it could worsen the problem. I am sure those two are good, but has anyone been to them?

If you are willing to drive a bit, I went to a GREAT one in Reston.

I would recommend going to an ortho. surgeon http://www.c-o-r.com/about-physicians.php and then p/t Loudoun Physical Therapy - Lansdowne location - Beth is awesome. Beth really knows her stuff and she is a miracle worker! 7/443-6700. I had a great experience doing that and the physical therapists work on excercises with you and massage you.
I would also recommend a massage therapist in conjuction with it- a great one is michelle malocu who does advertise in the newsletter- i have gone to her and she is awesome- deep tissue, shiatsu, reflexology, i think she is a reiki (sp?) master as well... 571-333-4943.
Good Luck!
ps i have been to a few chropractors before and NEVER had a great experience. i always spent most of my time on a massage table (lame- why am i paying for this when i can go to brookstone and sit on their massage chairs for free???) and then they adjust me- i walk out with no great excertcise focus and no hope for independence!!! i LOVED the physical therapy route so muych more- it was very liberating!

I've also seen Dr. Dowell and I thought he was very good. I worked for a chiro for several years, so I'm picky. He was very professional (some of them are wacky, if you ask me), a good listener, and did a very gentle adjustment. I'd give him a try.

as someone noted above, Dr. Dowell is at Lighthouse Chiropractic -- on the second floor in the same building at Quizno's, Broadland's Pub, etc.

I am a firm believer in chiropratic care and I have a very good one that I use in Chantilly that I could give you the contact info on. I have been going to him for 4 years. However, before going make sure you find out exactly what is going on back there. You might want to try a good orthopedist first, go thru the battery of x-rays and MRI. You don't want to do anything that could possibly make the situation worse. Let me know if you need his number.
