Donating

I would like to donate some stuff (clothes, household items, toys, etc.). Can anyone recommend a good organization that will pick up?

If you can, I think it's worth a trip to take the stuff to Loudoun Women's shelter. They have a resale store, so they take most household stuff, and they have a really goo percentage that goes to the abused women's shelter (they run the store specifically to help fund the shelter) So teh money stays local.

Definately...The Loudoun Woman's shelter is a great place to make a difference. Easy to donate to, convenient location, immediate help to the needy, and it is a local charity. We've been giving to them for years. They take everything from clothes to little tyke stuff.

I am going to donate my things (and we have a lot, I have been working on it slowly) to the LWS from now on.
Where do you deliver the items? Should I call before I go?

Becareful when donating at Salvation Army. A lot of people drop things off outside when they are not open. I've seen scavengers rummaging through the donations. I was told some of the scavengers are second hand stores, and antique shop owners. Not exactly who I want getting my stuff. As long as they are open I would consider it ok.

We have donated at the Salvation Army dropoff in Leesburg.

However, the last couple times we have noticed the staff going through our items and pulling things out for themselves. The most recent time we saw one of the ladies working there holding up my wife's shirts to her, and placing two or three in a cubby hole behind the desk.

At least I got the receipt. :D

I haven't been to happy with Salvation Army lately. They've gotten really picky and their prices are kind of high for second hand stuff IMO! We were donating two complete captain beds but because they weren't put together they refused to take them. They were solid wood. I was appalled. They could've gotten some money from them and helped out people in the shelters. I don't donate to them anymore.

As long as we are talking about drop offs, there is also the Clock Tower Thrift Store in Sterling, by the Burlington Coat Factory on Rte 7. They benefit NoVa Family Services; I don't know anything else about them.

They have a drop off in back of the store, Fri - Mon 10-5. Just ring the bell. They also have other locations.
