Look to purchase two mountain bikes.
I assume you're looking for used ones. For road or off road? How much are you looking to spend?
Try www.craigslist.com or the city paper (website). Lots of good deals.

Looking for used, not sure how much to spend, we are new to the biking world. Just looking for a pair of decent bikes for beginners in our area. Would like off road.

I would stick with a few year old model. Stick with brands like Specialized (Hardrock, Rockhopper), Cannondale, REI brand, Gary Fisher. I've seen Rockhopper (decent starter bike) go for below $200 used. Nows the time to get one. Also look for last years model on sale in stores. You can get a great deal. Some places offer life time tuning.
Also check out www.performancebikes.com They have retail locations through out our area. Check out a new Giant (brand name) bike.
When looking at used bikes, take someone who knows about bikes. You may have to end up paying a little more for tuning and parts after the purchase.

Hberg, I support Teaks recommendation of Performance Bikeshop. I got my Mt. Bike there a couple of springs ago and its been great. If you are a novice though, the bikes they have Costco are good values ($200-$300). They may not be assembled as well as a shop may but I bought one and its been fine. I sold, built and repaired bikes in college. I would NOT buy a used bike (even from me) because the safety/condition of a bike depends on how well its been maintained and how hard its been ridden. I'd rather see you get a pair of brand new $450 Mt bikes (on sale) than a 1/2 priced used high end Gary Fisher $800. The $450 bike has most of the features as the $900 just not as light or durable. I'll be glad to tell you more and make a recommendation on the type of bike that'll best meet your needs. Be sure to leave room in your budget for a helmet, shorts, shoes and gloves.
