Security System revisited

We are looking to purchase a security system, and have some decent offers from companies. Unfortunately we have a disagreement in what we want, so I figured I see what other people think.

Offers for security systems are either for hardwired or for wireless systems. Is there a difference in security? Are hardwired systems more secure? We aren't worries about the cost as much as we are worried about people being able to "hack" into a wireless system. What are experiences out there, anyone have any research that supports one over the other?

Man, no answers on my question about the security system. Okay, let me make sure I get some answers this time.

Would a republican system be better, which is the hardwired one, or a democratic wireless one? Which one is safer? Can the democratic system be broken into? Can the hardwired one be modernized easy?

I would have responded to the original post, but I do not currently have a security system. Personally, if I were to get one I would prefer a hardwired one. With a wireless one, I would worry about interference/hacking.

Can a wired system be installed after the house is already built, though? Assuming you want the wires buried in the walls, I would think that it would be cost prohibitive to install a wired system after drywall is up.

A good installer can fish the wires anywhere they need to go. I'd go wired.

A coworker mentioned to me that she is getting a wireless system. I think they told her that the only threat is someone "listening" to her system -- and who cares about that? (She is somewhat paranoid and would not go for wireless if there was an issue.) It seems to make sense, since the system probably looks for a signal when something goes wrong (like a door/window is opened), you would actually have to jam the signal to shut down the system. Sounds hard to do, and probably not likely, since there are lots of potential victims without security systems (like me).

I hate to say this - but either is just as likely of getting hacked (if you can say that about wired? ;) Unfortunately, if someone really wants to get into your house, and they know what they are doing, neither system will stop them. But what will deter some are the signs/stickers in your window that say you have a security system to begin with. Or get a dog, if you don't already have one.

All this being said, I've had security systems put in in the past and have always had great experiences with Vintage Security. A friend of mine owns the company and they are really professional. I believe they offer both now, and are a good company to work with.
