Driving through a school zone at 25 mph (while yapping on your cell phone) is NOT a suggestion.

But isn't 25 MPH the speed limit in a school zone? And even tho I am not fan of "driving while yapping", it is not against the law (yet! hopefully).

Driving 25 isn't simply a suggestion -- it's the law. Guess I worded that wrong! Is it just me, or are the crazy drivers around here the moms in the mini-vans and SUV's??

i'm guessing you meant thatthis SUV was flying at 30 mph or more and not paying attention...

hard to say if the minivan moms are worse, there are so many MORE of them that it stands to reason that we see them breaking the law more. i WILL say that i witness then most consistently as the most distracted, roll through stop signs without stopping, drive like they have the right of way regardless of the actual rule, and float from lane to lane and make turns without using a signal, and seem completely unaware that anyone else is on the road...

but not all of them- some are courteous, mindful drivers. one in ten, i'd say...

Ummm... it's 20 MPH in the School Zone (when the lights are flashing) NOT 25.

Claiborne is 25... I just looked on the way home :) It drops from 45 to 25 when lit.

Actually it's the maximum allowed speed (with good conditions, dry pavement and clear visibility), so you don't have to drive 25MPH, you could drive 20 MPH, or 10 MPH. God Forbid anyone drive below the posted limit.

Could have been I guess. I was thinking of specifically of Claiborne which is 25. There are plenty that are 20 too.

I experienced a red minivan speeding thru the flashing 25 mph school zone this morning myself. I take Claiborne daily and it's amazing how aggressive some of the drivers can be.

Coming home last night I had a woman going below the speed limit - on her cell phone - in the left lane. I realize this is a separate complaint altogether but there just doesn't seem to be any common courtesy anymore. If you are driving slower, move to the other lane. I would say she must have known that she was annoying the cars behind her but I am thinking she was too rapped up in your cell phone conversation to even notice.

    Sorry for my rant...

There's a school zone in Potomac Station that is 15 MPH when lights are flashing.

I wonder why there are different speed limits for different school zones (25,20,15)?

I know that Virginia grants cities and certain counties and towns the authority to set their own speed limits (not to exceed state maximums) but why would there be such a difference for the same type of speed zone (schools)?

It is too bad that in this area we have so many important people who can't be bothered to not only obey the law but to give a crap about the safety of children. :(

I fear that it will take some kid being plastered by a soccermom texting while driving, to get people to take it easy. And that is a tragic way to bring a problem to the attention of people. :(

Probably the same reason there are different speed limits period. Different road setups and different environments.

Elzey (sp) in front of Hillside is totally different from Claibourne.

Yes it is. I'm assuming that means she has 4 kids -- even more reason to drive recklessly.

But I think the school zone speed limit for Ellzey is 25, just like Claiborne.

Several months ago I was passed by a woman in a mini van IN the school zone on Ridgeway. I was going 20 and she zipped around me to the left... 300 yards from the stop sign. What did she gain? 20 seconds? Unreal...
