A few of us from Brambleton are going on long weekend bike rides and I was wondering if there was any interest from some Broadlandlers too. I don't think there is a local Ashburn bike club (Haven't found one yet) so we are just going w/ loosely organized rides:

    Here is the info-
If anybody is interested in going on long bike rides (30+ miles) on early Saturday or Sunday mornings shoot me a p/m. We avg. around 15-20 mph depending on hills, take plenty of breaks and rest assured we never leave anybody behind. We do not do this to go all out. So if you have interest, let me know and we can arrange meet up times. Great way to meet other local athletes, build up our peloton, explore new routes out west, while also committing yourself to a great weekend workout! We would also go on shorter weekday afternoon rides just around Ashburn. Later in the season our rides are extended.

We either depart directly from Brambleton & head up through Broadlands or drive out to Leesburg (or other potential routes listed on Potomac Peddler's website), and go from there. Should be comfortable riding on roads, although the vast majority of the roads have very light traffic.

Also- for any triathletes out there too, I turn these into Brick workouts for my training every once in a while so would be interested in converting these to full workouts.

sounds cool -- what is "early" ? I hope the weather stays warmer for a bit so I can start riding into work in the mornings! Going to try for a tri or 2 this season, too... sucks that the Broadlands tri is ~$90 -- crazy!

Typically between 8:00am-9:00am when it gets warmer out. If it’s colder, we depart later but this schedule seems to work out pretty well so those who participate can enjoy the rest of the day with their families.

Personally, I think $90 is overpriced for a sprint race in a pool. The Setup Events are priced at $60 for early registration and I would much rather sign up for one of them since most of them are in lakes. Just my 2 cents.

Just a few reasons to race at Broadlands Tri.

    1. Convenience - For the Broadlands Tri you just roll out of bed and onto the starting line. No hotel room needed ($$$) & a good night's sleep is more likely

    2. Price - Most races make a sizable contribution to a charity. Some do not. Also, it costs money to hold a race on busy public roads with police assisting.

    3. Support local businesses - It is of course, your choice to race or not race. If there are not enough participants, then the race will go away. Then you may find yourself saying, "I wish that there was a closer race than York, even a sprint with a pool swim".

    Just my two bits. [/hijack]

I wish that I could ride with you, but my weekends are completely tied up between work and volunteering. Check out http://teamtpr.shutterfly.com for their schedule of rides. Last year, there were "bricks" every Saturday morning.

you guys should switch to something other than active.com =) I raced last year, still undecided on this year. Also, I don't get the $10 non-USAT member fee :( .. is that for insurance or what?

$90? I just checked my registration and it was $81.18. Now... the $190 for Nation's? Fuggedaboudit. Too rich for my blood.

I'm not a USAT member, $10 more -- I think break even would be like 4-5 tris per year or something .. I only did 2 last year.

$75.00 Are you a member of USAT? no - $10.00 Options Total $10.00 [IMG] Processing Fee [IMG] $6.99 Total $91.99

When you see Fitness First mentioned, they mean the one right here... over by Red Robin, Panera, etc. I guess that's called Ryan Park?

Yeah... all sanctioned races require you to be a member or to purchase a one day temp membership. Find a non-sanctioned race and you don't have to pay that!

After buying tri clothes, a tri-bike, bicycling clothes, 3 pairs of $140 running shoes, monthly health club memberships, two pairs of bicycling shoes, a Polar heart monitor, a bike computer, a new helmet, tri-specific socks, winter training gear, ice packs, and I'm sure that I am forgetting a ton of other cra... I mean stuff, the last thing that I am going to worry about is whether an entry fee is $65 or $90.

If you join Team TPR, I believe that it covers your annual USAT membership.

I got my road bike ('96 DeRosa Primato) for less than your shoes... and my tri shirt is a hand-me-down and i don't go to a gym... I'll take you on... it's the engine that counts, right? 8)

Did you do last year's b'lands tri? What was your time?

    mwb2218-

I got back into tris this year and have been biking down to Purcellville via the WO&D which from the house is about 40 miles. Would love to ride about 40+ with some drafting in there some where :) Where do you guys meet and the ones you pick up from Broadlands where do you pick them up at? I've seen a few groups meet at the Safeway, is that your group?

Been thinking about biking WO&D but the other way to Alexandria but would prefer to do it with a group. This past Sunday a girl in front of me bit it and ripped her forhead open and we had to call the EMT out to get her. Made me think that biking that distance by myself without a phone or at least some gauze wasn't to smart.

I'll shoot you a private message w/ my contact and get you on our distribution list. Not too much interest from Broadlands Residents to date but a few of us from Brambleton go on Saturday or Sunday. I'm open to meeting anywhere since we go down Claiborne. Its a small, but fun group and we enjoy it.
