    Hello Broadlanders,

I am interested in doing some research on having a Community Garden in Broadlands. It's a large amount of work and I want to see if there is interest first before I pursue it. There would be a lot of coordination with the HOA, Van Metre, the County, and I don't even know who else at this point.

Please pm me or post here if you are interested, and also let me know if you would be interested in being on a committee organizing this with me.

I know there is only a small percentage of Broadlanders on this Board, but it would at least give me an idea of interest.

    Thanks,

    Lori Seidmeyer

I'd LOVE to help. We have a ton of plants that need to be split (Morning Light Grass, Peonies, Becky Dasies, Perriwinkle) and would be happy to donate.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but when talking about a 'Community Garden', we're talking about plots for residents to plant fruits, veggies, etc, correct?

I would be interested in a garden plot. We have a small plot in our yard but something larger with more sun would be great.

Absolutely fabulouse idea. Was just thinking about a veggie and herb garden in my yard, but this sounds great. I've got some mature plants in pots on my porch that I can contribute. I like Round Hill's set up if we can do anything like that. Please let me know how I can assist!

Thanks to all that replied. I have received several pm's as well so it looks like initially, there is some interest out there.

The first thing to be done is to find a location, which I understand will be the hardest part.

I would welcome help and would love to get a list of people interested in a plot and also in helping, so if you could pm me your info, that would be great.

    Thanks,

    Lori

How about on top of the big hill across from the Boyd school? ;)

If we're thinking of the same place, it's where the kids used to slide down the hill when it snowed and now they have a fence up. That is slated to be developed by Van Metre into several single family homes, I believe.

Thanks though and let me know if you have any other ideas.

...I am pretty sure that location suggestion was meant as a "joke", right JLC?

Perhaps this should be brought up at the next meeting, ask if there are any obvious locations (from the HOA and Van Metre perspectives).

Yeah, I was teasing. It would have been pretty good, though. It's a large, flat space that gets lots of sun.

I remember there was one in Vienna when we lived there. It's a great idea! Although i'm not sure the top or side of a hill is the right place. ideally it is a fairly flat plot you want, and with this soil - as in Vienna, each persons "plot" was made with a raised bed and the whole garden was surrounded by a fence of sorts to keep out rabbits and deer.

HA, I knew that evil smile was put on there for a reason. I'm going to the HOA meeting tomorrow to discuss this as well as other projects the Habitat Committee has in the works.

I'm very interested in the community garden and would love to help out on the committee. I have a good sized garden in my yard, but I've always been interested in a cutting garden and possibly growing other crops that require more space.
Please contact me to help out in the planning process.

Hey Caroline, that is great! I'm so glad you're interested in the committee as well. I would like to get a committee meeting sometime over the next 2-4 weeks to go over a plan of action for the garden. Please pm me your availability(eg. weekends, evenings, etc.)

    Thanks,

    Lori

The HOA now has one possible location. HCA has agreed to let us use the same 4-acre parcel next to Clyde's that they were going to let us use if BRMC was approved.
