I know I'll have to replace them when the office is open, BUT, what happens to cards that get left behind from last season? HOA people, anyone?

I spoke with a guard yesterday who seemed to think there was a stack of cards somewhere but was unable to find them.

Last years cards go to the HOA office and if they are not picked up they are disposed of. You will have to stop by and get new cards printed.

As a side note. This year we are not keeping cards at the pool. If you leave them behind you will need to stop by the office to pick them up. We had over 250 cards that were being "held" at the pool last year. Each time you come to the pool you must have your card with you if you want to enter - this will include Adult lap swim that starts the end of June. There was some flexibility this weekend on entering using your last name if you were in the system - but that feature will not be available after today. Please make sure you have your cards. Thank you.

Okay, so just to be clear, no cards would have been held at all? Wouldn't it be super easy just to email or call the peeps versus throwing away cards that cost $, then if they don't come pick them up, toss them...I'm just saying,....Not something you would notice was missing until now and zero opportunity to collect them.

Yes I agree. We tried that one year, but the time it took to sort through the hundreds of cards and get them to the right people just was not worth it. Plus many of the people who come in we ended up printing new cards for any way as they are sure they lost them at home.

Well you would have noticed them missing the next time you tried to goto the pool if you kept them after each visit to the pool.

They should never have been left at the pool to start with...

Now here is something to get mean about...Today, the guards at Summerbrooke told the adults to get out of the pool during the kid break because they, the guards, were too tired! Now that's good work if you can get it!

Was this every break or just 1 of them? Seeing how there are only 4 guards there 1 for the desk (and because we were at or close to capacity) 3 guarding the pool if they did this 1 or 2 times in the 10 hour shift I think it is not too much to ask. Especially since it may have been the 10 min that they needed to get some of the basic cleaning done in each of the bathrooms. Now if the day was slow and they had been sitting around doing nothing I may agree with you but all these guards were working very hard today.

Sounds like you need more guards.

Well then you can pay more HOA dues too.

Funny how that works eh? :) 'You' is 'we' when it comes to the HOA.

The whole idea of leaving cards with the pool office seems odd to me. It takes the people at the gate forever to sort through hundreds of cards to find mine to give it back to me as I leave. The cards have barcodes on them, is it possible to scan them as we enter so they know we are residents? Seems like it would be a lot faster.

Another note... We went to the pool yesterday and found that the diving board, slide, and the entire deep end of the pool was closed. Any idea why?

On a normal day I have an extra guard that I can shift around to the needed pool but when all 3 pools hit capacity I do not have that flexibility. So for 1 day a season we may have a full 10 min break - including the adults.

Because when we do have a problem with a patron - if we have their card I can easily suspend their privileges. Without the card I have to find someone who knows the person I just kicked out.

Yes because the pool was vandalized and feces was thrown into the deep end. CDC regulations requires the material to be removed, the area super chlorinated and closed for a min of 30 minutes. The deep end opened up later in the day.

Here are a few thoughts on this whole thread:
I never stored my cards at the pool, I have a pool bag for that.
Was hoping that because they are ALL missing, they are missing together.
But having never lost the cards before, I thought it would be neighborly for the finder to advise that they'd been found.
Maybe left at the pool, maybe securely hidden in my house or maybe profoundly lost forever, we'll never know.

As far as the deep end of the pool, slide, and diving board; unless there is a poop incident, it should be open.

As far as a guard taking an unscheduled break...if you did that in any other job, you'd be fired. I understand that it was VERY crowded (plan accordingly for a holiday), and hot and that they were tired. But we grown ups work our buns off and if we can take 10 minutes in the pool without 3 kids on our backs we should be allowed to do it. I get tired at work, but I get the job done. In reality, they have a few days at capacity, but for the most part the pools are not full. They get lots of inclement weather days also, are they paid for those? I feel certain the pool company is paid regardless of weather but correct if this is wrong.

Just imagine if you were out to dinner or at Best Buy or at the check-out counter at Wegmans and the ON DUTY person helping you decided they were tired and took a break and told you to wait.....even 10 minutes would aggravate darn near 100% of the people.

Staci and Steve are feeling defensive for the guards but it's not about Staci and Steve, I think you do a fabulous job. You all know that wouldn't fly anywhere else. To your question Staci, it happened once that I heard, the second time was really just a test to see if he would say it again, but when he approached her, the lady got out of the water, so he didn't say the words, presumably because he didn't need to. I have no doubt he was planning on it. And he DID tell everybody hanging their feet in the water to put their feet up which is VERY bizarre. They didn't appear to be adding chemicals and they most definitely didn't clean the ladies room.

If the pool company schedules a floater on the predictably high capacity days, it should not increase the HOA fees. Busy hours are 11-4pm, typically.

I just hope that this reasoning or exception isn't acceptable to management on a recurring basis.

Many years as a pool manager, life guard and swim coach here...lifeguard coverage is NOT a place you can save money. I understand that during break is the appropriate time to rest your lifeguards, but if you don't have enough coverage for one of them to be out there watching the pool during break/adult swim, then you don't have enough coverage to begin with. You want your guards to be well rested, if they are not alert, they may miss something. No one wants that to happen. Most people consider it a slack job, but having to be constantly at that level of alert, dealing with unruly teens, heat, sun, parents that refuse to parent their children etc. makes for a tough job. If people cleaned up after themselves, taught their kids how to behave and not trash public places, the lifeguards wouldn't have to be in there hosing down the ladies room. It amazes me the mess some people leave behind. Several years before my kids can come up there without me, but if they act like some of the behavior I have seen at the public pools, I'd appreciate a phone call. There is no way to make everyone happy. I'd rather skip the 10 minutes alone in the pool and have the guards alert and cooled off when they come back. I am sure it won't become a habit.

So maybe I need to explain myself a little better.
As for cards -they cost minimal to print and we give everyone that wants them free cards at the beginning of the season. Some people just want new pics, others lost them, others have no idea it is just what they do. Since the HOA only has a handful of employees to keep costs down the idea of paying them $15/ hour to return the few cards that are accidentally left does not seem logical to me. Besides the time they are not doing other jobs, it actually is much more expensive then printing the cards all over again. Yes it is a waste or cards but it is the reality. @ TeamDonzi I figured you had left them there accidentally, but can tell you many people do not and actually expect the guard staff to keep them for them.

The Break. Yes we all work hard but do you honestly put in a 10 hour day without a lunch break? I do not know many people who would work non stop for 10 hours without so much as a food or bathroom break in fact I believe it is illegal. That said, I can understand if they did it 1 time possibly even 2 times in 10 hours. However if this was happening every break then I will and have addressed it. That is why I asked you how often it was occurring. As for the feet - the new aquatic manger feels that it is much safer for everyone if they are completely out of the pool. Seeing as how the job of the lifeguard is to make sure everyone has a SAFE and fun experience if they feel this is the best method then I support them. I understand it is different then what has been done in the past, but as I say often different is not necessarily bad.

The deep end at SW- there are many many many reasons that is should not be open most of them dealing with safety issues but I will not get into that here. This weekend I do believe just closing off the deep end of the pool vs closing the whole pool for poop was the best option. If you disagree you will have to take it up with the Loudoun health department and the CDC the guards are just following policy. By the way - the pool company gets paid no matter what the weather, but the lifeguards only get paid if they are working. Pool closes = no paycheck so it is in their best interest to keep it up and working.

Lastly - yes I have put in a lot of time at these pools - please remember I do this as a volunteer I am a regular resident like all of you. However, I manged to get all 3 pools open and running and the biggest complaints so far (and I hope to keep it that way) are about not allowing adults in for the 10 min break, pool cards that were not kept from last year, and the deep end having to be closed for 1 hour because someone vandalized the pool with over 1500 people at the pool this weekend I think it was successful.
