Please take advantage of these free programs offered by the LCSO.
Broadlands MUST have an attendee at a minimum of 2 meetings a year to retain an active NW status.
NW does not work with out active residents.

Got an email from the sheriff's office that also said that neighborhoods need to attend TWO training sessions a year and if NONE show up, that means ALL of the NW signs in the community MUST be removed....

Sure we can have signs but what good are they when our NW isn't actively being used by our residents via patrols? Forgive me, but do we have to have "active" patrols or are they not permitted? I forget what the rules are nowadays.

    Thanks!

Patrols are NOT allowed. NW is all about paying attention to your surroundings and calling in ANYTHING that seems unusual or out of place. Do not be afraid to "bother" the Sheriff's Department. That is what we pay them for.

How come they disallowed patrols?? I know that in Fairfax County where I used to live, the neighborhood had vehicle patrols and they were rather very effective.....

    Many reasons
    1. These days it is harder to get volunteers to commit the kind of time needed to be trained and do the patrols so it cost the LCSO more money to do the training then the benefit
    2. Patrolers are not trained law enforcement so often their actions kept the police from being able to fully prosecute when people were apprehended
    3. Groups often became more vigilante then patrol and found themselves in trouble with the law.
    4. Nationally it was discovered that people reporting activity surrounding their own home and own daily routine were significantly more effective in reducing and or stopping crime then in patrolling an area that they were not as familiar with.
    5. The LCSO does not want residents doing patrols

Some of them I suspected but others I didn't know of and found it interesting. Thanks for your response...
