On Sunday morning I was driving on Vestals Gap Drive where it crosses the WALKING/BICYCLE trail. Two kids, one on an electric/gas scooter and one on a "pocket motorcycle" flew past, crossing from one trail to the other, without stopping or looking at the traffic on the road! I was able to stop, but no more than a couple feet away from them.

First of all, I was under the impression that it was illegal to ride these on streets or trails.

Second, what kind of parent would buy something like this for their kid, knowing the danger and legal issues involved? AND, then not supervise their use and safety? Your child's lack of good judgement doesn't fall far from the tree.

Saw these same kids (with a 3rd, possibly an older sister) at the same spot you mentioned. They actually did stop when I approached by car, but I wondered the same thing about the mini-motorcycle and the apparent lack of supervision.

Our house backs to the trail and we were on our deck and saw these kids, not the first time either...we see quite a few motorized vehicles on the paths in the warm months....I told one kid they weren't allowed on the paths and he said he didn't see any signs about that and continued on. Is there anything that came be done?

Kids today won't respond or obey adults other than their own parents. I guess its the sign of times. In Japan, if you talked back, you'd get your arse whupped by the other adults, Im told.

LOL - I'm with you.....that's why there's so many young kids who are unfit in the country. Use your feet, ride you bike....it's more fun!

As a former skateboarder who skated half pipes and bowls, I never went without a helmet because I didn't want to have any head injuries that will prevent me from skating more in the future or even have a life...

As someone who has several professional skater friends, I can attest that MANY of them don't care if the helmet looks cool on them or not...They want to be around to keep skating. Some of my buddies were the "godfathers" of the skateboard scene in Venice Beach, California. Many of them are themselves now fathers with kids and in no circumstances would they permit their own kids skate WITHOUT a helmet.

Don't let your kid go on bikes/skooters/skateboards/longboards without a helmet. It could mean the difference between death and life and/or living with a permanent disabling injury requiring constant medical care.

I live on Vestals Gap and see these kids go back and forth in the street all day long. I don't mind personally. I do mind the people that fly past them at 30-40 mph. I don't think they should be on the trails since it's a confined space and the chances of incident increase. On the other side of the coin, if people could drive through the neighborhood at a sane speed sans cell phone then they would be less likely to be looking for alternative places to ride around.

Personally, I rarely break 20 mph driving through the neighborhood and I approach the trail crosswalks at a crawl with the expectation that someone is going to jump out in front of me. It amuses me to see people getting frustrated, tailgating me and giving me dirty looks when I actually stop at the stop signs.

Yeah... that is always hilarious... and more so when I further hit the brakes. Never fails, the lips start muttering and hands start waving and I know they're in for a lousy day ahead... :pofl:

:angryfire: Really ticked me off this morning to see a couple of folks on Ridgeway completely drive around parents (on the wrong side) that were trying to turn into Mill Run for drop off. Had I not had my little crew in the car there may have been a rather embarassing display for them. Bulletin to those idiots, if you don't like the school traffic then around and exit off of Stone Hollow...slowly please.... and for the lemmings who follow suit, find a bridge.

I agree....but what burns me up more :angryfire: are the :screwy: :censored::censored: folks who speed down Ridgeway at a speed higher than the posted limit on Ridgeway like its Daytona 500! Do they NOT understand that this is a NEIGHBORHOOD with kids? I didn't think that they could (or don't want to) comprehend!
