I've been using this over the years to treat our lawn for ticks, since our property is surrounded by wetlands:

    http://www.scotts.com/smg/catalog/productTemplate.jsp?proId=prod180004&itemId=cat50078

It's easy to spread and lasts for 3 months. It also rids your lawn of other destructive insects, such as cutworms and fleas. It can be used on lawns, flower beds and gardens according to the label/literature. It does specify not to use it near aquatic animals, so avoid its use near ponds, etc.

So, my question is - I plan to have a fruit/vegetable garden. I haven't made the plot yet - do I treat my yard and not treat where the plot will be? Is there something I can use once the plot is in - ie: treat around it but not spray the growing food?

We have a fenced in yard so I don't worry about deer but other critters are on my hit list.... thanks!

If you have a single family house, the fence is not tall enough to keep deer out.

Any natural remedies to keep deer and bunnies away? We spent quite a bit of time and money in our flower bedding and the deer have discovered the "buffet" in the last couple of days. Hostas are all gone and the flowers (impatiens) have been picked off :(

Since you seem knowledgeable about this stuff, what do you use to reseed some small bare areas in the lawn to regrow grass or even some larger areas? Thanks!

Jack Russells are one of my favorite dogs...Have a friend that has one and the dog would always chase after billard balls and pick it up with his mouth...Would love to have one!

    WELL HERE"S YOUR CHANCE!!!!

    Name: Cody
    Age: 2 Years
    Sex: Male
    Breed: Jack Russell Terrier
    Color: Tri-Color
    Size: 15-20 pounds
Location: Front Royal, VA (We are fostering him)

This is Cody and he is a cutie! He is a Jack Russell Terrier and is almost 2. He is neutered, crate trained, housebroken and knows basic commands. He likes the water and LOVES playing fetch! He is also up-to-date on his vaccinations.

Cody would be best suited in a home with a strong owner with previous Jack Russell experience who is willing to put the time into exercising and training him. Cody is the quintessential Jack Russell - willful, high energy and very intelligent. If he is unhappy or scared he will snap, so he needs someone who will work with him to break him of these bad habits. We are requiring that there be no small children living or visiting the home and requiring a fenced yard as he really needs room to run. He has not been tested with cats but will chase small animals. He has spent time with one of our older JRTs and they get along fine. He is intimidated by larger dogs and tends to snap at them.

Cody just needs an owner akin to his special needs that will give him the time, attention and love that he deserves.

Are ticks and fleas invading your home and terrorizing you and your pets?? The Safer® Brand Mosquito, Flea & Tick Killer kills mosquitoes, fleas and ticks on contact! This powerful formula of potassium salts of fatty acids (20%) and pyrethrins (.24%) provide a powerful 1-2 punch that not only eliminates mosquitos, fleas and ticks on contact, but boasts the USDA National Organic Program 'For use in organic gardening' seal. That's why I was looking into to use this... It seems to be a safe option.

That's a 'contact killer' though, meaning it will only kill the ticks that it comes in contact with when you actually spray. It won't have any impact on the ticks and other critters 12-24 hours later once the solution dries. (that's what I understood reading through the literature about the product; my understanding could be incorrect).

Personally I prefer a treatment that will keep working for a longer period of time, like 2-3 months. Additionally, having to spend $28.50 to cover a 2500 sq ft area could get pricey if you have to repeat the treatment multiple times a week/month.

Just my opinion though. I guess if you want to stay 'organic', your choices are limited and you need to make some sacrifices, but the product you mentioned would seem to work. It's just to expensive an option for me...

I am waiting to hear from http://www.ecotekpest.com/index.php. I sure will be price shopping for different options. We are trying to stay as eco-friendly as possible, we'll see. With the dog and kids playing on our yard with no fence and wetlands gone wild in these days, ticks are out of control. Not sure how we'll survive this year. I already got bit again this year, and picked a tick off our 6 year-old's hair yesterday from just playing in the yard. I am trying to not get something that is just "green washed". We are also keeping the grass very short and will not be watering it. Thanks for the feedback.

Don't act all smug, that's child's play for a deer. Although, there's a small chance a deer would attempt to get into a small yard, don't underestimate them. We had an 8' fence, they still got over and out of ours.
