Did Sal's change management or ownership?? IMO their food was always decent but they had good friendly service. Recently I have seen the quality of their food diminsh and their service has gone from good to terrible. A young kid has been working the phones and counter the last few time we ordered carryout. I usually get the words....um, huh, yeah, nah but I do not believe I have ever heard him say thank you or anything along these lines. In fact, my last trip I felt he was rather rude. He said my small order would take 20 min. I arrived after 25 min of placing the order only to wait another 25 mins at the restaurant. Did he give an apology or offer a drink while a continued to wait.....no

I believe the owner opened a new restaurant in Leesburg. I guess he is vesting all his time, energy and money into that restuarant. We are done with Sals and will go to Giovanni's or Tony for much better food and service. Has anyone else had similar experience with Sal's?

Personally, I think what you've experienced has been standard practice at Sal's for the past few years. I've been twice since they opened and never went back.

We were there last weekend and it seemed ok to us. I am from New Jersey and I have found their service to be about the same as I would when visiting family up north - not super friendly but efficient (and kind of abrupt).

Although...Sal's Italian Ices and Zeppoles are AWESOME.

Sorry you had a bad experience. I do agree with you, Giovanni's is a pretty authentic pizzeria for NY style pizzas.

Agree 100% and we did the same, went there a few times and realized customer service was not on the menu, decided not to go back. waiting an hour for a pizza with rude employees, even though the food was good, so not worth it.

Just adding another data point: I called for some pickup a few days ago and they were very friendly and efficient.

just went there with our baseball team last night, service was fast and friendly and my slice was delicious. I even ate the pizza bone, which I rarely do. the wine was so so, but with Parallel next door- not an issue for me!

I could never figure out how Sal's stays in business. The two times we were there, they had no customers, the service was terrible and so was the food.

We like Sal's. It's a typical NY pizza place. It's counter service and I could care less if someone says thank you when I buy food from them. The pizza is good and it is family run which is also very typical of NY pizzerias. The kids are probably working because they have to, not because they want to which is fine too, because whoever said you always get to do what you want, especially at that age? We've eaten there several times and honestly I don't remember whether anyone said thank you or not.

520 East Market St in the Leesburg Plaza Shopping Center. Near Party City and Radio Shack.

I grew up in Leesburg and still have great memories walking to Giovanni's during my summer vacations in the 80's. Still love going there today. I like their calzones a lot. They have a lot of great food. Back in those days they didn't have wait staff...but Loudoun was a much smaller place back then.

I agree about the service at Sal's but that doesn't bother me all that much when I'm just getting a slice.

    Thanks

    Mike

My wife and I have both noticed that the quality of sal's has gone downhill. It has gone from being very close to authentic NY Style pizza to something closer to Northern Virginia Pizza. Crust has gone from thin and perfect to puffy and chewy. Toppings have been skimpy lately too.

We'll give them another shot though because everyone has a bad day now and then.

Same here, grew up in Leesburg and moved East :) Looks like many others have the same issues with Sal's. Not sure how they will complete with Giovanni's and La Villa Roma in Leesburg (if their service and food is consistent to here in Ashburn).

Must agree about the service. The young boy that works there seems more interested in watching tv than serving customers. I, for one, think the management should know.

Now that you mentioned it, you've hit the bull's eye here. That jogged my memory from over two years ago when I went househunting and for lunch we ate here. I now remember that the kid was more interested in watching TV and I kept having to go back to the counter to ask him for refills, extra napkins, etc. Its like the boob tube was more important to him than the service to us. Needless to say, we didn't go back because it was apparent the place wasn't run very well (my opinion).

To continue to prove the point about terrible service:

    1. When I pointed out that prices on their website were different than their menus, the kid mentioned that they do not maintain the site. He also said, management reserves the right to change prices without notice.
    2. They gave my order to someone else. We agreed to wait while they remade the pizza (25 min). However, the kid did not even offer to waive the charges for their mess up.
    3. Instead of asking me to sign the credit card receipt he said rather rudely, "sign here". No please, no could you. Obnoxious.

BTW, the kid (heavy set, blonde and rude as heck) is the owner's son. Classic example of what customer service should not be.

That was our last order from Sal's.

Figured I would bump the old thread rather than start a new one.

Received an email from Sal's today that tonight (3/28/14) is their last night in business. Indication that they will open a food truck instead.

Thanks for the info, the place had issues as noted in this thread but I regularly went in for a couple slices. Horrible location as there was no easy way to run delivery out of that back corner.
