I will call VM today, my husband can replace the capacitor, as long as he doesn't electrify himself! Fourth of July on the Fifth!! I just hope the capacitor does the trick.

Well, I just called Climatic based on some of your recommendations. The fee to change out one capacitor is $200-$400...to change out a $17 part. Wow....I know they have business expenses and so on, but no way on earth am I paying that.

Where is the capacitor located? Is it outside or what?

Yes, it's outside in the unit-on the side. You can't just open it and replace it though. You need to pull the fuse so there's no power to the unit first. There are several videos and instructions online on how to do it.

Ok, capacitor replaced. It was $22, and 20 minutes to save a few hundred. Working great now.

Our main level AC was out.... So called Bowman's, technician came and fixed it in 10 min... he just needed to add freon (2.5 lbs).. and charged $230.

Not sure if this is a good price.

No, he didn't do it. I had the same service done by the same technician 3 years ago.

In anticipation of the hottest temps of the year, our upstairs unit just quit working. Well, the fan is working... it knows it needs to pump and it's doing so, but we're not getting cold air. Hubby is with the kids at the pool and I'll have him take a look when he gets home and call repair if necessary, but in the meantime I'd like to pick anyone's brain who is online right now! Is that possibly a capacitor issue? Or maybe something else?

If the outside unit isn't running and it's blowing warm air inside, then yes, it could be the capacitor. It could always be something else, but both of my units that did that were capacitors.

Try Modern Mechanical, they are located right down the street in Ashburn, 571-291-3338. Very reliable, professional and beat our other estimates.
