My wife is heading out to a girl's night at at Los Toltecos tonight. She has been instructed to get to the bottom of this. I will report back.

We went the other night and did not get charged for more chips. We did not need more salsa though.

Our experience there last night was not good. Bland, poorly presented food with indifferent service. Tried a margarita with the same results. The food at California Tortilla Kitchen (in the Village) is better. Seeing the place with few customers on a Saturday night at 7:30, I see many of our neighbors agree with us - we won't be back.

Disagree, Los toltecos much better than CTK. I've never had a bad meal there, service is hit or miss, but food is exceptional. Just for therecord, I will eat anything eles before Mexican, as I grew up on it. LT is pretty close to the Tex-Mex as I remember it.

We had the opposite experience there last night (around 6:30). Server was very personable, joked with the kids, served the ladies first, refilled waters when needed, etc. Food was not out-of-this-world good but we don't have that expectation -- it was above par for what you can get in these parts.

The pay-for-the-second-round-of-chips: My daughter noticed the charge on the menu so when the server asked if we wanted another bowl, I asked if it was free of charge. He replied, "For you, its free!".

When I lived in CA mostly tourists went to CTK.

The go-to place in Santa Barbara was a small joint called La Superica, excellent salsa (I could eat it w/o any chips and enjoy it) homemade tortillas (made by hand while you watched standing in line) meat and onions cooked in bacon grease and lines OUT THE DOOR. No waiters etc.

Back in the day you would see Julia Childs there (so I've been told). And inexpensive! I can still remember my favorites by number on the chalkboard menu...

Why we can't accomplish the same here baffles me...

I'm reviving this thread. We had a really good dinner tonight (4 adults). The place was packed. Obviously, plenty of people think the food is good. The bar was also very busy. I tried the fajitas for the first time and they were very good.

I have said all along that the charge for chips/salsa is there for those that think they can buy a drink or two and make a meal out of them. We've never been charged and we go a couple of times a month.

Since last fall, we've switched to Moe's. Easy to get non-cilantro'd food there too.

You do realize cilantro is traditionally in latin food, right? Moe's is nothing more than a fast food burrito place. It's not really mexican food. Anyway, point is, Los Toltecos is still very popular and the food is pretty good, traditional, latin food.

Perhaps, but it still tastes like soap.

Gave them another shot last weekend. Meh. Bland food, a margarita with just about zero tequila in it, rushed and confused service.

    Three strikes... yer out.

We like the food; my daughter and I almost always get the queso con chorizo dip and split a single chimcanga platter/ We normally can't finish it! Muy Sabrosa

There are some entrees that are better than others. Excellent salsa.

we ate there tues night. chips and salsa were awesome. service was awesome. hamburger was a hockey puck (for my kid). taco meat was blah (for another kid). my fajitas were awesome and my 3rd kid loved her enchilada.
we had a pretty great time, even though the one kid didn't like her taco. the hockey puck kid didn't seem to care and she ate it anyway. we danced in our seats to the fun music that was on the speakers. we sat outside! ole!
