As on most windy days in the neighborhood, the wind managed to blow a bunch of recycling out of homeowners bins and onto the street/yards.

Much to my delight, I watched Patriot (the HOA's trash contractor) go out of their way to pick up all and I mean all the recycling. Specifically; the guys on the truck got out and proceeded to hand collect the recycling that had blown onto yards and the street. Kudos to Patriot for caring enough to keep our neighborhood tidy, especially on windy days.

That's great feedback Erika. Their contract is up for renewal and observations like these go a long way in helping the Board make a good decision on the matter.

For what it's worth, I've seen Patriot go out of their way multiple times over the last couple years to provide great service. I even posted pictures on the forums last year where I had noticed that they had lined up every trashcan on our street perfectly after passing through. I for one think they're doing a marvelous job in our community.

I collected about eight recycle bins today at corner of Hawksbury and Royal Fern which were flying faster than the Winged Monkeys in Wizard of Oz. There are about four left and stacked up by the mailboxes if anyone is missing one! ;-)

+1, these guys do a really good job. I have several times put some heavy items and awkward items out that I feel bad about and they always get it and I've never had issues with them.

I wish I knew the regular people on the route so I could have tipped them during the Christmas holidays. I got the UPS and mail carrier but I don't know these guys.

Whenever I see them do something that impresses me, I email the owner of Patriot directly to let him know. He always relays the good feedback to his crews, especially if you can specify the day and the street you witnessed it. Usually, they only hear from folks who have issues, so I make a point to make sure they get positive feedback as well...

Here too! They also turn the small recyling bins upside down during windy and rainy days.

I think they are great. I too have seen them go out of their way to pick up trash that blows around or falls out. I've seen other contractors in the past keep going down the street :angryfire:.

Great idea, can you post the owners email address?

    Thanks

On a slightly different but related note - can something be done to encourage more recycling in the community? Other counties/communities participate in points/rewards systems that one earns (e.g. Recycle Bank) . Is this something Patriot participates in and is willing to support?

I do love the fact that they singlestream recycle. Makes a big difference not having to separate stuff.

Today must have been another windy recycling day because it was another day of recycling spread throughout the yards and wooden areas. I am glad people recycle, but to really recycle the items have to get into the recycling truck and get to the recycling center. For that to happen, people need to pack their recycling bins better. And if you just had an unlucky day and the wind targeted your bin with force, please pitch in and pick up.

Yes! Since picking up trash in the wooded areas and common grounds is not included in our monthly HOA payment, it is up to each homeowner to do their part. From the looks of the wooded area at the end of my street, that doesn't appear to be the case. I just spent considerable time picking up someone else's recycleables.

I wish we had the room for this. If only I had not bought that upright compressor to blow out the sprinklers...

I imagine people would take a smaller one with a lid though. We currently keep the black one in the kitchen (OJ containers and the like), and a blue container for paper in the garage with a lid. The amount of junk mail we get is truly impressive.

Also note that Navy Federal has a shred coming up in May at Ice Rink. I have two boxes of stuff I've been saving.
