I am looking to purchase a new laptop. Basic machine, for internet, word and excel. Not much more. Looking for something around $500.

Any suggests on the best best stores to visit for options? Online stores?

    Thanks in advance.

Microcenter in Vienna is good and usually has some reasonably priced refurbished models. Crutchfield is an online vendor that we've had good experience with - they are located in Charlottesville so shipping is quick. They also have a "scratch and dent" outlet for discounted items.

you can find quite a few decent models for that price. We just picked up an HP dv6##### at microcenter for about that. We just happened to be near there at the time otherwise a local shop will have similar or close-enough prices. They have a two week return policy.

Look at Dell and if you're not in a hurry, wait for a sale. You'll get a quality laptop at a very reasonable price. Dell's refurbs are an amazing value and come with the same Dell warranty. They have sales weekly so monitor their site and the models/config you like and when it's within your price range, pull the trigger.

Newegg is my favorite online, once you've bought from them they'll send you email sales. They also seem to know when you've been looking at things and send you targeted email sales. They have really good prices to begin with. Bought 2 15" Acer laptops a while back for ~$400 ea for Kim and daughter.

Costco is good from a warranty standpoint, they have a concierge service (included) we've used. We had a Dell XPS8300 with a bad motherboard. Really easy to get through to an actual person to talk to. I think it is a 2 year warranty and 3 if you use american express.

Liked ASUS and HP in our last laptop round of shopping. Models are always going to be a 'flavor of the month' discussion. I recommend going to best buy to compare form factors, key board feel, ergonomics.. and use that info to narrow your field. Then find the right model of compromises.. and just buy from best retailer that has the closest to that target. Best Buy, HHGregg - but pay taxes. Dell, wait for the deal (and use online coupons!). Newegg is solid for online ordering.

Another plus for dell outlet. I've bought a desktop and 2 laptops there, all have been perfect (all bought with 20-25% off coupons too).

Interesting you say ASUS flynnibus. That's what we ended up with from MicroCenter.

i3 processor, all the other stuff, for $449. Right in the price ball park.

Thanks everyone. (by the way where is a Dell Outlet around here)

    Dell Outlet:
    http://www.dell.com/content/segmenter.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dfo

Dell Outlet coupons (one site of a gazillion, do a google search):

If you don't see a coupon for the system you want on dell outlet, just wait for one if you have the time.

+1 to this post. My latest laptop is from Costco, they usually have good monthly deals on Dell and/or HP. The laptop previous to that (still use also) was from New Egg. I really like the reviews on New Egg.
