Simple.. use the median instead of playing Carl Lewis..

and why do you need to cross 40yards to beat a car coming down the hill.. when you only need to cross half the road to beat those guys. So actually it's only '20 yards' (really it's less than that) you need to race over.

If you don't feel safe, you can always goto one of the traffic controlled intersections on the road.

Speeding is still aggressive whether the road is congested or not.

    Last post on the issue:

I ask you all to do the following:

Drive to the intersection. Wait until you can just barely see a car coming. Then merge onto Chickacoan by taking a . Now instead of you, picture your 16 year old daughter having to make that split second decision.

Now walk there and picture your 10 and 12 year old boys crossing the road. There is a crosswalk, so they should be ok, right?

Finally, since I already called VDOT and they scheduled a study, it is up to them, not us.

    Why is speeding aggressive?
Are people who can run fast aggressive? People who talk faster than others aggressive? I type really slow, so are my inflammatory (so-called ;) ) posts NOT aggressive?

Is it only because the law says it is?

If I do not see a car, do I still have to wait?
I do not have a daughter.
When I was 10-12, I crossed a significantly busier 4-lane Sterling Blvd that had a 45 mph. It was not a struggle.

I still think you should be more concerned about actual speeding on Chickacoan then that intersection. And yes, I drive Broadlands Blvd fairly often and honestly do not see you issue.

Let's make a deal. People can speed all they want down Broadlands and Claiborne, but if you speed on Chica, Belmont or Vestals then you are to be dragged from your car by your neighbors and strung up. This includes blowing through the stop signs. I know it's a shocker but even if you're turning right you're still required to stop. I simply don't understand the need to make the neighborhood that you live in less safer by not just holding off for literally seconds until you get to a more major road.

As a side note: if you're the parent of a skinny teenage boy with purple spikes in his ears and driving a black blazer/bronco with a single high school sports sticker across the back window you may want to get a handle on him before someone else does. I guarantee that if that kid comes down someone's street at 50 mph and then cusses them out in front of their kids when told to slow down that it will catch up with them in a bad way.

You are supposed to stop at a stop regardless. People here seem to have no idea how a 4 way stop works - ironic given there are a stupid amount of them here.

And I do stop. Never said I didn't.

And FWIW, I also do not speed in the community, on ANY road. Speeding for me is reserved to the "major" roads where I am mostly just flowing with traffic.

unfortunately I think ridgeway will always be a problem. When you have basically the entire neighborhood funneling out just two exits that are residential streets lined with houses (and a school!)... no amount of lecture, technology, or common sense is going to overcome those planning flaws in the neighborhood.

Short of a cop every 100yrds... that road is going to perpetually be a problem.

he was mocking Mr Rodger's about the window of opportunity in his postualation about pulling out in the intersection. He's saying there is no real traffic there and for Mr Rodger's concern to be valid, there needs to be traffic. So he is saying 'should I wait for a car to show up...'

    Ahhh, sorry.

Of course, I meant "do I have to wait AFTER coming to a complete stop". :D

I would like to thank Loudoun County Sherriff's Department for finally cracking down on speeder on Demott!!!!! This is posted for 25 mph yet there are those doing 60+. This road has many walker/runners/bikers yet our neighbors and those maybe racing to get to Starbucks ignore the posted speed limit. Our own residents can't even seem to obey the speed limit.

    Update!

VDOT engineer got back to me. He said that the road design is right on the "threshold" for the intersection of Broadlands & Chickacoan. He observed several cars speeding down Broadlands, and said that is an enforcement issue that the speed limits are set for the design of the road. They expect drivers to stay within 5 mph of the speed limit, and set the limits based on that.

He agreed that the visibility was not sufficient for the intersection. He stated that the evergreens kept drivers coming off Chickacoan from seeing another 100+ yards up the road, and that the road was not designed with those in mind. VDOT could come and chop them down, but he suggested that I speak to the HOA in the meanwhile.

Side note: Almost got plowed over on Saturday while Crossing Broadlands Blvd toward Clydes. Looked left, right, & left. Started to RUN across road. Car was within 50 yards before median with no sign of slowing. I was not pleased!

I'm still pushing for a lowering of the speed limit on Clairborne once past Waxpool.....

Walked with my daughter to the bus stop today and it literally took her 5 minutes to cross Clairborne at Stone Hollow to get to her bus stop. The volume and speed of the cars was crazy! At least she can see the cars coming down Clairborne from Croson, but the bend in Clairborne means she is halfway into the first lane before she can see both lanes.

I know we've been talking about the speed limits and stop signs near here for some time, so maybe I should just focus on moving the bus stop.......

Why does your daughter need to cross Claiborne? There is no cross walk or Stop sign on Claiborne at that intersection, and the Bus is supposed to pick up only the kids on the eastern side of Claiborne. It is a divided highway at that intersection, so kids should not be expected to cross. If she attends either Mill Run or Eagle Ridge she should be a walker to school, right? If I am not mistaken, I think most of the homes on the immediate west side of Claiborne are designated as walkers.
