Several layers of icy snow have been removed (by me and my shovel) from my sidewalk. I'll let the sun do the rest. I think I have a sunburn/snowburn to show for it, too.

For those of you who were home this morning and then merrily left for a day on the slopes, I hope you did your shoveling first.

Oh, and now my cat wants to go play in the snow... I opened the door and he changed his mind.

Yeah, I shoveled - at 6:30 this morning - while it was still dark. Then left for work - my NON-Government job. I'm home now, and thanks to the wind that blew today, much of what I shoveled is covered over again. Don't be so quick to judge when it appears someone hasn't shoveled - you don't know their story. They might be like us - working stiffs who actually have to go to work no matter what the weather is like.

The Federal Government was open, so Federal workers had work, too.

Fed employees were given option for "unscheduled leave", which means they did not have to report to work if they choose not to.

T8erman- Does that mean Fed employees still get paid for "unscheduled leave"? How does that work? I am not a gov't employee but if they choose not to go to work, do they get paid out of some non-vacation fund that is unlimited or what? Am curious, that's all. Thanks!

They take leave (PTO) but it was not scheduled in advance so it is unscheduled leave which used to be known as liberal leave. Some Federal workers have the option to work remotely and therefore receive their normal compensation as if they were reporting to the office.

If taking time off, Fed employees would need to use their personally accumulated annual leave (or sick leave if they are sick) (both are earned by hours per pay period based upon years of service), which is paid time off like many employers have. Otherwise, Fed employees would have to go into a leave without pay status, in which they can take time off without being paid.

Without the "unscheduled leave" announcement, employees are not supposed to take annual leave without first having scheduled the leave beforehand or take sick leave without being sick. "Unscheduled leave" gives employees some flexibility since the weather conditions vary greatly across the region.

I have a GOVERNMENT job and was REQUIRED to be at work. Staying home wasn't an option.

Similar to Villager, I grew up in San Diego and never learned the etiquette or ethics of living in a place that gets snow. My first winter in Ashburn (2004), I didn't know I was supposed to clear the sidewalks and just figured I'd leave it until it melted, but someone brought it to my attention. After someone told me I was like, oh, okay, that makes sense, and now I know better. My point: (1) No, it's not common sense to someone who grew up where it doesn't snow. (2) Say something to them to make sure they know.

    Informational Post. This is a copy/paste from http://www.broadlandshoa.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/SnowRemoval.pdf :
County ordinance (Chapter 1022) that requires the owner/occupant of a property which has a public sidewalk adjoining or touching the property in front, rear or either side, to clear or treat that sidewalk for snow and ice within 6 hours of a snowfall (by 12:00 noon for overnight snowfall). Property owners abutting common areas (i.e. along Ellzey Drive) are also responsible for clearing those sidewalks. This will provide a safe walkway for children going to school. The County Department of Building and Development is responsible for enforcement of this ordinance.

Maybe just me, but the previous 5 pages of posts in this thread and the numerous other Threads from years back might have already conveyed the message.

    YMMV

This afternoon, after driving through the neighborhood on my way to an appointment, I couldn't help but notice that there were quite a number of houses whose sidewalks were still unshoveled after the snowstorm the other day. Now, I can understand why the school system decided to close the schools for the rest of the week.

We live such busy lives. Shoveling snow is hard work for some. Instead of complaining so much, get out there and help your neighbor. You might get to know him or her a little better in the process. I know my back is bad. I shovel anyway and even help 2 of my neighbors this time. One of my neighbors, I saw jet out to work. I figured he just had to get in this time. He usually does his walk, so instead of complaining about him. I did his walk, because I had the time.

    UVA,
I completely understand what you're saying.

Sadly it seems there are some people in the neighborhood who just don't seem to get it. Clearing your sidewalk is not an option...it's required by HOA covenants and Loudoun County. Loudoun is one of the most strict Counties in the DC area = $250 fine

Here's the County Ordinance, see page 2 section 1022.99 PENALTY
    http://www.loudoun.gov/documents/4337/5119/8234/8238/Chapter+1022-Sidewalks.PDF

Yesterday I took pictures of Hoa paths and homes along Ridgeway. This home is directly across the street from Mill Run. I attempted to shovel their sidewalk & apron (yesterday pm/am)...it's a solid brick of ice. The Hoa path terminates onto Ridgeway.

As for foot traffic, on my street alone we have 17 kids that walk on Ridgeway to Mill Run or Eagle Ridge. This number doesn't include the other kids who use the Hoa path connecting Stonestile, StoneHallow to Ridgeway. And don't get me started on the Hoa tunnel (under Claiborne), it's a solid sheet of ice.

Loudoun may have a hefty fine but they are NOT strict.

When was the last time you ever heard of someone getting fined?

And honestly, I think on days when the sidewalks look like they do above, our Loudoun police force will have more pressing matters than inspecting sidewalks.
And... when the sidewalks look above, how many parents drive their kids to school? ;)
