Please make sure your trash and recyclables are secure in their prospective bins. And if you notice your garbage has blown all over the place - PICK IT UP! It's always the same people...

I keep a roll of duct tape on a shelf next to my trash can. On windy days, I secure a small piece of duct tape from the trash can lid onto the trash can. It keeps the lid from opening and the trash from flying down the street. Simple but effective...

Another windy day another day of trash blowing all over Broadlands. :angryfire:

My home is situated in such a way that my all of my neighbor's unsecured trash ends up in my yard. Blowing trash ends up in my trees. :angryfire::censored::censored:

I don't mind picking up stray trash every so often but when it's 3 recycling cans worth of stuff I kind of stop wanting to be neighborly.

Can the HOA look into having our trash contractor provide locking trash cans?

Locking trash cans may help some but as I said in my thread "Please Be Respectful", folks should put their recyclables in bags so when the can blows over, loose trash is not blowing all over. We use big contractor bags in our can and when full, we just tie it up. Simple and easy and we don't have to worry about our HOA dues going up with the purchase of new locking cans.

I believe I read at some point that they actually prefer it all to be loose in the can. I think I read that anything in a plastic bag that arrives at the sorting center ends up getting tossed and sent to the landfill because they do not spend the time to open plastic bags that are filled. I may be wrong, but I think I remember looking into it once due to the same frustration of stuff blowing around. I also just use a strip of duct tape on windy days. If you find info that says it's ok to leave it in plastic bags, please post...that would be a great solution.

I was told that the plastic bags get caught in the sorting equipment, gunk it up and cause mechanical problems - so they get tossed. The bags are not recyclable anyway...

Maybe the solution is for everyone to have a large bin with a latch on the lid.

I like the duct tape idea for days like today.

We once visited the recycling facility in PW county for a school project. (https://www.americandisposal.com/). Very informative, and you truly understand the process they go thro. I believe most trash collectors in this area send their recyclables to American Disposal. I would highly recommend the tour, if you can make time for it. Plastic bags are bad for automated recycling machines. They clog the machines. The machines work well when commingled recyclables are loose. And yes, plastic bags do get thrown away as contaminants. Do not bag your recyclables. Instead, save the plastic film separately and recycle them at the local grocery stores. Also - I see several folks around here put styrofoam in the recyclables. Styrofoam - while as a material is technically recyclable - it isnt actually recycled by the trash collectors, as it isnt profitable.

The only thing I was told was ok to bag was shredded paper.

Does it mean it will get thrown away as trash if I have my recyclables inside a 30 gallon plastic bag? That means I've wasted a lot of time & effort separating the recyclables :(

I do not have a space in the garage for another huge bin.

You can save a lot of space if you break down cardboard boxes and flatten plastics, or better yet, buy items with less packaging.

Lets make sure we are considerate of all neighbors and take the extra few minutes to secure your trash and recycling. Nobody wants trash all over the neighborhood.

Has anybody actually confirmed that recyclables INSIDE a 30 gallon plastic bag gets thrown away as trash?
    Thanks.

From Patriot's website, "We prefer that you do not use plastic bags for recycling." From what I read on another Loudoun County website, the bags themselves are trash and not the contents.

That's correct. Like I said, we use plastic bags. At this point, what's the alternative on a windy day? Littering the neighborhood and potentially killing wildlife with the plastic and paper strewn all over?

The quote says "We prefer that you do not use plastic bags for recycling."

That's correct. The quote does say "We prefer that you do not use plastic bags for recycling." They do not prohibit it. Again, it's only necessary on windy days.

On really windy days I don't put it out at all and wait till the next week. I just make sure to really break down boxes and crush cans etc ..
