It seems that the hoodlums are ramping up again. Recently I've learned that these things have happened:
    • Bike tires slashed at Mill Run, during the school day
    • Bike stolen from Mill Run
    • Bike stolen from Eagle Ridge
    • A few bikes stolen from SW pool (summer)
    • Car mirrors being damaged
    • Car keyed
    • Car stolen on Ridgeway
    • Cars being rifled through at night
There are probably more instances, and how sad is it that people's property is no longer safe in Broadlands? Keep an eye on your kids folks!

I agree. Our car was broken into on Tuesday and everything was rifled through and a couple things stolen. And tonight we had a **very** suspicious guy come up to the house while I was unloading groceries and casing the place. Be aware!!

Friend of mine that is a State police officer that lives in Ashburn said that its going to increase exponentially with the completion of Metro ....Don't know if that will be the case or not....and I HOPE not!!! He said that since many of us have dual incomes meaning both work full-time to afford living here, criminals know people aren't going to be home most of the time....

I think that metro won't have the effect on crime that officer was referring to. Since metro operating hours are cut considerably it's not like people are going to be riding out to Ashburn in the wee hours of the night, breaking windows, stealing GPS's and then taking the last train back to wherever by 10:00 pm. What happened to the neighborhood watch? I've only lived in Broadlands since 2014, but it seems by reading these forums that one existed at one time.

The metro creates crime rumor was debunked a while ago in the Washington Post. Increased Crime was only true in parts of DC not the suburbs. I mean really who thinks criminals from SE DC are going to ride 90 minutes out to Ashburn to rob someone and ride 90 minutes back in?

The petty stuff talked about here is likely local knuckleheads who need a hobby to occupy their time.

Talk to mall security at Tysons Mall and you will know that metro access does have a significant impact on store thefts and other problems.

I do agree that it will not be that easy for someone to take Metro to Broadlands and commit a lot of crimes due to the distance from the Metro to Broadlands and the size of the area.

I went back to my posting and never did I say anything about people coming from D.C. to Broadlands....Have you noticed that some could be riding in from Reston, Falls Church, Dulles, etc. Nowhere did I say from DC... Metro is an easy way for people to hop on to leave from the scene anywhere quickly without having to use a car with license plates that can be written down and called in. Not saying it will be from Reston or Falls Church solely--Just saying that it CAN occur. It just remains to be seen yet...They may NOT come to this residential area- although I agree that it may be unlikely but again who knows?

It's not the train per se, it's the causal effect. Higher density mixed use areas generate more crime.

So the build-up we have seen in our immediate surrounding area the last several years is to blame for the crime wave? What happened to the neighborhood watch? Was there one, or just a thread here in the forums?

The HOA tried on multiple occasions to start a Neighborhood Watch Program. Fizzled away each time due to a lack of interest.

For your cars putting a camera up is a good idea, I've had one for years now looking over my driveway. They are super cheap and high quality. Mine connects to a 2TB mycloud drive. Whole setup was about $250 back when I did it. Mine is very obvious to be seen - on purpose.

About a month ago, our son's bicycle was also stolen from Eagle Ridge MS and there was video surveillance that captured the criminals (2) in action. Unfortunately, the picture wasn't clear enough to positively identify them.
