One of the best features of the forum.. that you may not be aware of, is the search that automatically lists all New Posts on the forum. This is available by clicking on the link in the Menu Bar. This is shown below

However, this will show all posts from all forums you have permissions to... including some busy forums you may not be interested in.

Now, you have the ability to exclude forums from this listing! This is controlled in your user profile. Click on the User CP link in the menu bar, then click on Edit Options from the left menu. Scroll all the way to the bottom. You will not see a list of forums you can exclude from the new search listing.

Click to highlight a forum. Hold the control button on your keyboard when clicking to select multiple forums. Click Save Changes, and the next time you click on the Unread Posts link, new posts in those forums will not be listed!

Another Tip: If you want to catch up, and mark all posts on the forums as read. Under the Quick Links drop down in the menu bar is a link to mark all forums read

    Enjoy!

Is there a feature to exclude threads started by a particular poster? ;)

At least you provide a link to the thread rather than saying, "Instead of just going ahead and providing the information you have requested, go thread hunting in a different forum, 'cuz I've started a whole new one! I start unncessary threads because it's fun."

But to answer your question. YES!!!!

heh...that's annoying too, but what really makes me want to come through the monitor are the reviews.

"There's a new Whatchamadoodle open in WhogivesaS, WV. We went today along with a friend of mine from Soandso who was in town for blahblah with her husband and 2.5 children. We went there in our vehicle. While I was there I bought something, my friend bought something else, and the kids had a great time! On the way back we stopped at Jim Norton's Cafe for lunch which was delightful as well. I had the Fronkus soup and my friend had...."

    SHUT UP&%$)!^%#^!$#(&$# How about this:

"There's a new Whatchamadoodle open in WhogivesaS, WV, if you're interested."

Sure...but you still see a box where the message should be.

"Soandso has posted but they are on your ignore list"

...we just want them to be gone, period. No notification, stricken from the record...like good ol' Stalin and his revisionist history. :)

Thank you! This is a feature I have wanted for a long time!
Originally I wanted it so I could exclude the Open Band forum, as that doesn't apply to me. However, a few other forums have recently had their "signal to noise ratio" decreased.

Now if we could have an Ignore Thread command, that would be perfect!

Good news... I've found a way to ignore users totally :) There might be a place or two where they show up.. but you will not see the post, or box that they posted.. or their threads

It does require some changes which I should test.. so I'm not going to install them right away. It will have to wait till I have some free time in the evening to modify and play.. but there is a solution :)

    Yay!

Did having a nice "don't start anymore threads" chit chat not work?

    Cool...

You know, now that the end may be in sight I'm sort of apprehensive about blocking our favorite gadfly. You know how you watch some television shows or bad movies for the specific point of being annoyed? Or horrible commercials? A small part of me actually enjoys being infuriated. Maybe it's just me. :)

The exclude forum feature is great, but I've found one odd side effect. The count of unread posts never gets down to zero. My count is currently 21 unread posts, and that seems an unlikely number given that I excluded several high-traffic forums.

In the week that I've used this feature, I'm sure Politics and Dining have had more than 21 posts, so it is unlikely that the unread count is factoring them in.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks!

Thankfully, the politics forum has been rather quiet this week!

Could be even older posts. Use the 'mark all forums read' in the quick links drop down to catch up and then see what happens after that.

Ok, I've finally gotten around to tweaking the forums. These are hacks, so they aren't perfect, but they do the job.

    Now..

You will not see the box for ignored user's posts when viewing a thread. It just doesn't exist. If you look close enough, you'll notice it's missing because the post counts will skip around. IE if they are post #3 in the thread, your posts shown will go 1, 2, 4. etc

You will not see threads started by ignored users. The thread simply will not be visible - this means the ENTIRE thread. However, the thread isn't removed, its just not shown. So any counts can be off. Example, if you do a search, and the results are shown as threads.. if it returns 4 threads, but one is started by an ignored user, the page will say 'showing 4 of 4' but you will only see 3 threads shown.

The net of this is, your unread post count will probably be off because there will be threads and posts you do not read, but will be returned by the search. The best solution to this is simply use the 'mark all forums read' after you've read all the posts you want and if the count starts getting up there and annoying you.
