BzyCookn your comments are right on, as a person that has eaten many of a pizza in the NYC area I agree with you. They just need to figure out how to let the people that order by phone not have to wait in the same line as the people that are ordering. I know several people that are not going to go back until that is fixed but it is great pizza.

How will they know it's fixed if they never go back?

The Ciro's Centreville shop has a great concept going: They have one line for take-out/pick-up, and another for eat-in orders. It's always packed in there, though, because the food is delicous. I think Sal's are probably trying to save costs right now with staff, seeing they're just starting up at probably a very high-rent location. Although I don't believe they are skimping on quality. I'm getting ready to sit down to a delicious pie my husband and son just brought home. Happy Friday, everyone, and Buon Appetito!

Thanks so much for your comments. We sincerely care about our customer's satisfaction. As said in previous posts, we are very comfortable with our products as they speak for themselves. If a few pies out of hundreds a day are not perfect - well then there is a margin for error in every business. We still want to know about it in order to compensate our customer. As for the comments, we appreciate the feedback especially the positive ones. We also appreciate the "constructive criticism" as it is all a learning process and we all grow every day with experience. As far as the condescending, snide remarks - of course we see them, read them and take with a grain of salt. We don't post replies to them - we don't have time to waste. Some people are NEVER satisfied. We have had thousands of customers who have been very satisfied and we will continue to focus on the positive. We are very enthusiastic and will not let those few unsatisfied customers break our spirit. Those customers as well as the satified ones will always be welcome back to our "home away from home" for a "Real Italian Experience to Remember!"

Thanks to all for your support and words of encouragement.

    Oh, I almost forgot-
As for the crust - its not the water. Its the technique of hand tossing the pie. Here is the test. If you fold your pizza and the cheese runs off and the front end falls down - its not "real NY style pizza." It should be thin and crisp. Oh, I hear what your saying about the "pizza on the counter" There isn't a pizza place in NY or NJ that doesn't leave their pizza on the counter. We have a limited amount of counter space so we are just displaying salads and specialty items right now. No room for pizza displays. There are so many combinations of pizza toppings its hard to display them all.

By the way - We love Ciro's Pizza and Buon Appetit in Sully Plaza. I have probably had everything on their menu - we love it all! The owners are terrific real down to earth hard working people and the staff in both places are very professional!

    Sincerely,
    Doreen, Sal & Family

Thanks for your understanding. We have temporarily put up signs for pick up orders. The problem is we don't have room for another register. Its in the plan to re-arrange our set up. We have just been so busy and yes, we definately have to be conscious of our costs right now. We didn't expect such a great response. It will take a little while to pull the loose ends together. Thanks so much for your support and we hope you had a lovely dinner tonight! Have a wonderful weekend!
    Sincerely,
    Doreen, Sal & Family

As stated in the previous post- we are working out the logistics. We temporarily have a sign up to directi customers to the second window for pick up but the problem is - they still need to pay so we need another register which we have no room for right now. We are waiting for signs that will be easily seen. We will do our best to overcome this challenge. Bring those people on back Lee. Were counting on you! Thanks for your support.

    Sincerely,
    Doreen, Sal & Family

Thanks so much for short but sweet! You hit the nail on the head. Our goal is to have a little something for everyone. If a customer can't find something they enjoy at our place - just ask for what you want and we will try to create it. As for the length of wait time - we can only do our best to keep it to a minimum. Still working out the kinks!.

    Sincerely,
    Doreen, Sal & Family

The pizza was good and the sandwiches were tasty, too. Sal's needs better french fries, though. Foster's Grille has french fries that I would go back for, but Sal's fries don't have that same appeal. My wife (NY Italian) reminded me (Irish) that french fries are not a big draw for Italians, unlike Italian Ice and spumoni, which my wife and her family really liked.

Thanks so much for your comments. Glad you enjoyed the pizza and sandwiches. I myself do not like the french fries at all. The dilema is... the fries are a big seller. I don't want to take them away from the following of people who really like them. I personally only like fresh cut french fries, but your talking to someone who doesn't really like fries. My favorites are the spumoni and italian ice (lemon)! Of course the zepolis which should be coming this week are my very favorite item. Back to the fries... I think we may run fresh cut french fries as a special and see what everyone thinks about them. Give us some time. We are working on so many things at once. Trying to get a feel for what the customers want. Maybe we will take a survey! That should give us a good indication of what will work best.

    See you again soon!

I agree with previous posters- food is great and EXCELLENT pizza. I hope the long waits won't keep people away. I know they are working on the issue for pickup orders, which I think will improve things greatly. I have been twice and had to wait quit a bit for takeout both times- it was worth the wait but I'll hold off on going back until they work out the kinks. I think adding a 2nd register dedicated to only takeout orders (along with someone specifically working on taking phone orders) would really help.

So glad you enjoyed the food. We are hoping for the second register to come in about 2 weeks. This is a system that takes the order and sends it right to the cook as we ring it up. No running back and forth with order slips. We won't have to waste time writing up the orders either. Its a great time saver. Also, there will be a separate line for carry-out only. Another time saver. We have enough employees at this time as we have a very large family. Its a matter of waiting for the new register and running a few wires. So hang in there with us. We will implement changes as quickly as possible. Hope we see you again soon.

    Sincerely,
    Doreen, Sal & Family

Of course employees eat for free. So sorry we are not hiring right now. As we continue to grow we will be looking for more employees. That is of course after all family members are assigned to a job. I will be sure to offer that opportunity to the community first through this site when the time comes.

With all the buzz about Sal's, it's a shame that the management company hasn't seen fit to take down the Bravo pizza signs on the building. Sal's had their grand opening what, three weeks ago? They're still working under signs naming the previous tenant. Surely the management company had some warning that Sal's was going to open a store there, I doubt it came as a surprise.

OK time for the philly cheesesteak review from a NJ/Philly native. I will start off with the only disappointment for me (which may just be picking straws); Lettuce, Tomato and Mayo on a cheesesteak is actually called a Cheesesteak Hoagie. And it was my bad for not reading the fine print to see that it had Lettuce Tomato and mayo on it.

Now lets get down to the taste. In this area I dont think you are going to find a cheesesteak as good as Sal's. All the tastes were there;the meat was cooked and seasoned(if at all) perfectly, the cheese was melted and stayed nice and gooey throughout the whole meal, the onions peppers and mushrooms were cooked in a way that enhanced the flavor of the meat while not detracting from the flavor, and the bread...wow they got the bread down pat; a little crispy on the outside and nice and fluffy on the inside to soak up the grease.

While Sal's might not give Geno's, Pats or Tony Lukes in philly a run for their money, they definatly had all the tastes and textures of cheesesteaks found at any local pizza place in Pennsylvania. If you want the real cheesesteak experience ask to hold the lettuce tomato and mayo.
