We've owned a Dyson for over 7 years. We're never going back to any other brand. Over the 7 years, I had to deal with Dyson customer support regarding the flexible tube developing a crack/rip in it; I called, got to a live person within 4 rings and 5 minutes later, I was promised a free replacement, which arrived 4 days later.

Dyson might be more expensive, but it 'works'. When we first bought it, I vacuumed our living room with our Hoover. I then used the Dyson and when I was done, the canister was half full of dust, dirt, etc. The Hoover spent the night by the curb.

After burning out vacuum cleaners frequently (including hoover wind tunnels) we went with a Dyson several years ago. Haven't bought a new vacuum since. It is fantastic on the dog hair. I did the same thing as Eric did, vacuuming with our Hoover and then using the Dyson. I was amazed at how much dust, dirt, and hair the dyson picked up, from just one room. A couple of times we have called the Dyson customer service line for minor issues and had fantastic service as well. I'm sure I have saved money by purchasing a Dyson.

We've owned a Dyson for 5 years (and upgraded to the Animal model about 2 years ago) - IMO it's worth the investment - hands down. I was truly sickened at what the Dyson picked up the first few times I used it...I am one of those homeowners that vacuumes every other day and I am still amazed with the Dyson's performance.

If you want to drop $500 on a vacuum then why not spend it on a German engineered Miele. Everyone I know who owns a Dyson is sorry they did because it's heavy, bulky and it spews dust everywhere since it's not contained in a hepa bag. Test drive several before you spend that amount of money.

The dyson isn't heavy.. its nearly all plastic!
Bulky.. definatly a difference between old style and the newer styles (no just sliding the head under a chair, etc)
Spew dust? When you empty it maybe... not while you use it or store it. The container stays closed even when you remove it from the vacuum. Its only when you DUMP the container that dust is an issue - and that should be obvious considering keeping something sealed, vs dumping it. I just step outside to dump the container. Prefer that to not having bags when I need them or having to buy more.

Sorry KTdid, but your comment about Dysons "spews dust everywhere since it's not contained in a hepa bag" is just plain wrong. You either don't own one, or you've never actually used one. Or you 'friends' are simply exaggerating.

If you go to this URL, http://www.dyson.com/range/range.asp?base=UPRIGHT , and look on the bottom, you will notice that all Dysons are "Certified Asthma Friendly" by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, as well as the British Allergy Foundation Seal of Approval. I seriously doubt that my Dyson would pass these certifications if it actually 'spewed dust everywhere'...

In regards to size and weight, our Dyson is actually 'lighter' than our old Hoover. Don't like uprights? Dyson offers the DC21 which is a small canister model that uses the same Dyson technology.

It seems like what Consumer Reports didn't like were the lack of features - the ratings for suction were better. I've never tried one but I remember seeing a demo for the Rainbow vacuums, which use water as a filter, and being surprised at how much it picked up after using a regular vacuum first. Has anyone tried vacuuming with a Dyson and then going over the same area again to compare the results?

For example, CR had this to say about the Dyson DC17 Absolute Animal and it is representative of a few other models as well:

    Highs
This model excelled at cleaning bare floors and keeping its emissions low. It was very good at deep-cleaning carpet and picking up pet hair.

    Lows
This model was fairly noisy in our tests and hard to handle. It lacks suction control, manual pile-height adjustment, a retractable cord, and self-propulsion.

    Bottom Line
This moderately expensive upright excelled at cleaning bare floors and keeping its emissions low. It deep-cleaned carpet and picked up pet hair very well. It is somewhat noisy and lacks a few key features.

We're considering buying a Dyson and were talking about the difference between the regular model and the Animal. I thought the only differences between the two were the attachments (honestly I haven't had time to compare feature - feature). Is that true? We have a lab/husky mix that sheds like a madman (that husky undercoat!). I'd love to hear your experience with both, and what you'd recommend.

    thanks!

I did it. I bought the Dyson Absolute DC17. So far, I love it. I was concerned about the weight. It is lighter than my Sears Kenmore. It is very easy to use. Outstanding vaccum.

Oh, I used one everyday for one week, picking up dog and cat hair. As flynnibus states "it's all plastic" so why would it be heavy? Yes, it's all plastic and the attachments are difficult to remove and reattach, etc. And by the way...you're comparing the Dyson to a Hoover:rolleyes3: no wonder you're so pleased with the Dyson. I would be too!

Difficult to attach/remove? It's virtually the same as every other vacuum in that regards, unless you have one with a metal latch. It's just a friction fit.

If anything I'd argue there is no good attachment STORAGE... but putting them on/off is nothing at all.

Thought I would bump this thread again. I originally recommended Joe of JCB Carpet last year when we were moving out of our townhouse. Yesterday I had him clean our carpets in the new house and was again very impressed with his quality of work. A change from last year is that he is using all green cleaning products and the carpets look amazing. I thought we were going to have to replace one in particular but it looks brand new! I recommend him without any reservations.

Just wanted to post that we had Joe do our four bedrooms upstairs the first week of October. The outcome was outstanding. He did an excellent job. Here's another vote for Joe!!!
