The avatar on the side is actually the 'classic' vb style. It was changed to the avatar 'bar' style recently and many people do not like the new style - so much so that vb still offers the 'legacy' style as an option. I had left the 'new' style on the site initially simply because no one here knew much better and I didn't want to start customizing right away.

Ironically for your post, one of the complaints of the new 'bar' vb style is that it takes up too much room :) On posts larger then 10 lines or so it actually makes the post larger. On small posts, the classic style actually takes up less or about the same room.

For comparison, look at the attached screenshot. The post above yours is one line and is actually smaller in the 'classic' style, contrary to your comment. And you can see in your post, the styles are roughly the same size.

I think you will find overall, they average themselves out or the 'classic' vb style actually takes up less room by a small margin.

The default style will always be available - if it will be 'customized' to stay current to the rest of the styles or not I don't know.. depends on how much work it is to keep it up :)

I may offer a choice of post styles (between the avatar next to, vs above post) as an option if people want it... but I can tell you right now I think it looks much better in this style then the other. The wide olive bars in the avatar area tend to conflict with the wide olive bars in the quote area :)

Thanks for all the suggestions and comments so far!

Please keep them coming especially if you have an idea for how to improve the current choices! This is built by the community.. I know there has to be more web-ish designers out there lurking who can contribute :)

I'm about as creative as a wooden stick... so please help out!

Yes... that must be it. All of the moss green is giving me flashbacks to my Birkenstock-wearing days.

I like it! It presents a Broadlands feel, something the old style was lacking.
    Thanks for the effort!

It's ok, but the darker greens/reds are a bit much for my tastes (i like more organic colors like what's to the left of the post content) ... how about putting on some more stock themes so we have more options?

I miss the gradients instead of solid colors everywhere...

Yes, those are refinements I'm considering adding.. I know how to do basic ones... such as in the green bars.

Struggling with colors first made putting gradients off till the colors were more settled.

    Two minor tweaks tonight..

    changed the quote box background
changed the navbar to a gradient

While normally I like the gradient stuff.. I think here when not ALL bars are gradients it disrupts the view. I tried playing with gradients on the darker green bar and could not find a look I liked.

    Comments?

I really did know what it looked like before, but it looks beautiful right now and the colors go very well with the broadlands imagine.:) Steve and all who are working on this site all the time so we all have a wonderful place to chat and exchange thoughts and ideas and keeping us all abreast of what is just going on thanks a zillion:). Also a thanks to Eric (Mr Linux who also spends countless hours on this site too. THanks to both of you all and to any others that give so much of your valuable time. Also way cool to have meet many of you all at the happy hours and other places. And a special thanks to Sunny who I met singing at one of our local clubs as she was the first person I met from these forums several years ago. I also met Sunny's husband that night also . Looks real good Steve. Is the top of the page, middle, supposed to be solid orange? I am using Mozilla 5.0. I like the color.

Yes, its just a filler right now. The header is actually fluid and will resize with the page size.. the orange is just the background where nothing is right now. Still working on that area. That one will be more dictated by the rest of the site, its more of a 'functional' prototype of the layout stuff then it is the actual images that may end up being used.

Yes Sunny and it has has turned into Urban folklore ha ha:)

It was New years eve and it was right after it got dark and I I remember very well you showing up and asking me to see you all play and sing that night.:) Well here is how the folklore has grown over the years. I was home alone that early evening when you showed up. Well Dalyn comes home about an hour later. I tell Dalyn you are never going to believe this but this most beautiful girl just showed up here and asked me out for New Years Eve!!! ha ha Dalyn says have you looked at yourself in the mirror lately :) She says either you are drunk or on drugs but no beautiful woman would show up here and ask you out for anything much less new years eve. ha ha ha;););) This has grown into urban folklore at least in my own mind ha ha ha ha :clap::clap::clap:

    :agree:

Looks good! Thanks. The green/natural color scheme is sooo much nicer on the eyes.
When I Was working to develop a new user-interface for an electronic documentation software at a hospital many years ago, the software vendor changed the default color scheme from grey to blue. They got a LOT of complaints, so much that they changed it back within weeks. In my own hospital, two users had to revert to paper documentation... apparently some disease they had made it painful to look at the blues that the vendor selected. Forgot the name of the disease but I did look it up at the time, and it was real (I thought I was being hoaxed...).

    - A

Edit: You need buttons to match the new theme colors, they're still blue....

Yup... I was waiting to do all the heavy lifting on the buttons and icons until we were settled on the scheme.

I'm a graphics idiot so working through that is a big learning curve for me... learning all the tools and such.
