It' doesn't matter, there are no, repeat no, decent Tex-mex, New Mexican or Southwestern resturants around here. The best please I have been to so far is a little El Salvadorian place in Leesburg (el Choritso) off of the main street behind Mom's apple pie. That's it. Other places in the area are "ok" or less, and forget the chain restaurants, they are just bad. FYI, I lived in a city that had more Mexican and Tex-Mex restaurants than you can shake a stick at, and BTW, BBQ around here is pretty lame too.

Now That being said, I have grown to enjoy the vast diversity of ethnic foods, including Mediterranean, Japanese and Indian. Those are my favorite foods, which is good, since we have a sushi, a Mediterranean and Indian restaurant on almost every corner. That is one of the best things about this area, the unique diversity.

I would say On the Border in Reston is my first choice, and Tortilla Factory would be my second choice. We love both and go often.

Has anyone tried the new Mexican joint in Landsdowne Town Center? I can't recall the name, but it looked quite nice. I'm a big fan of upscale mexican restaurants that serve things a bit more unique than chimichangas and fajitas. Curious to know if that one's worth a try.

We have tried almost all mexican restaurants and for the most authentic we highly recommend Rio Grande in Reston Town Center and Las Toltecas in Countryside/Sterling. And that's it for us. The rest are second rate.

One of my favorites- although it's in Chantilly- is Picante's http://www.picantetherealtaco.com/. Used to go there all the time when I worked over there... still do when I go back to visit my ole workmates! It's in a little strip mall where 28 and 50 intersect. Looks like a hole in the wall- but oh, so yummy. And great service!

My other favorite is Tortilla Factory. Fantastic salsa!

When we lived there, we LOVED .. Casa Gonzales. It was a very authentic meal, at a really great price. FWIW ... we used to see a lot of immigrants eating there, so I would assume its close to 'home cooking' for them.

There aren't any good mexican places here in Pittsburgh. We went to one recommended by locals the other day, Mad Mex. The chips were bought from a vendor and served cold, however the salsa was fresh and tangy, they cost $2.50 for a bottomless bowl of chips.

The entrees however were much different, very tough steak in my burrito, and the pork enchiladas were not much better. The only authentic part of the meal was that I seemed to have gotten Montezuma's Revenge when I arrived home. :eww:

We tried Mariachi in the Landsdowne Town Center a few weeks ago....very good! We're thrilled to have some nice upscale non-chain mexican in the area. Food was good, as was the service. Definitely the best Mexican with an Ashburn address.

Ahh, good mexican in our area....has anyone found it yet? I heard a rumor that an Austin Grill was opening in the Dulles 28 Centre across from Wegman's. Last time I drove through there I didn't see where it might be going so I'm wondering how much truth there is to that rumor. I can eat my weight in their queso - so good you can taste the beer in it :) Any time we are in Old Town Alexandria or Upper Georgetown I try to talk people into eating at AG because I don't get yummy tex mex often. Anyone know anything?

You are silly to laugh at the title. With the size of the hispanic population in this area, it would stand to reason that we should have some good Mexican and South American food around. Stop laughing and start eating!

BTW, I have had some HORRIBLE MEXICAN FOOD in NM, Southern CA, TX and Mexico. Authentic and good are not the same!!!:angryfire:

The best food is usually a fusion of cultures. Remember, most of the spices added to true Mexican food were to hide how rotten the meat had gotten.:eww:

Was at Anita's Friday night and it was great! They were definitely slammed, but worth the wait. Food and service were awesome.

OK - so my really important question here is: does Anita's know how to make a decent quesadilla? Otherwise I'll just keep heading into Herndon to Baja Fresh.

We first went to Anita's way back when we lived in Vienna, VA - pre 1995!
