you all make good points, i know that there is a certain risk factor, but why would they just ban it when they could just try to make it safer, like a small fence at the bottom before the road so that no one actually sleds out onto the road. i completely understand that we are living in a sue-happy world where some of those who actually stoop low enough to sue corporations and individuals for their own mistakes, but with maybe a few safety enhancements on the hill we can keep it as a nice safe hill where kids can play.

You mean like the construction fence people moved out of the way when it was put up initially?

Do you all even read the thread you are posting in?

Do you think for one minute that if somebody's child were seriously injured or God forbid killed, that the parents wouldn't attempt to sue VM for not preventing sledding on the hill? Unfortunately, that's the reality of the world in which we live today. It just wasn't like that when we were kids - it's a different world now.

If it isn't your property, and you are asked not to use it, how can you defend sending your kids over there to sled ride?

I'm sure VM would be happy to SELL the land! Then you could decide who and what activities you invite there!

I like to sled as much as the next person, and I have many fond memories of lots of dangerous things I did when I was young, and I'm sure my kids will break some rules over the years, but isn't it our job to at least try to teach them to respect the rules of whoever owns the land?

I think that's what this comes down to. Nobody disagrees that sledding is great and that the right hills are perfect to create or recreate childhood memories. But, it doesn't make sense when kids sled into the street - too much risk for both the folks (kids and adults included) and the HOA.

Great point eam. For all those bellyaching about the Evil VM corporation that doesn't want kids to sled down that hill, ask yourself: if you owned that hill, would you let dozens of kids you don't know sled down it? Keep in mind that if you were honest with your insurance company and told them that's what would be happening on the land you either: (1) would not be able to get insurance on the property (so you would personally assume the risk of someone suing you for injury); or (2) would have sky-high insurance rates.

If you would hesitate to let someone sled on that hill if you owned it, I suggest you keep quiet about others who do the same.

With the snow, has the hill seen any use? I was wondering if the trespassing parents have been out in force, blocking the road off, etc.

Yep, there was sledding, parents involved, trying to avoid the "no trespassing" signs as kids slid up to the curb and almost into the streets.

I guess this will continue as long as there's snow and a hill. Let them have a good time!

In my view, that's quite unfortunate. I think the parents should be arrested for breaking the law (trespassing is a crime) and should be ashamed for teaching their children to violate property rights and ignore the law for their own pleasure. I can't wait for the first parent to sue the HOA, VM, Loudoun County, and gosh-knows-who-else when their little darling careens into oncoming traffic and ends up as a hood ornament. We all know how litigious our society is, so it is only a matter of time.

You can't wait for the first child to die?

No, I said, "I can't wait for the first parent to sue..."

Back to the topic, is anyone surprised with the growing crime problem in the county when so many parents are teaching their kids to disregard property rights and trespass? We cannot expect honest kids when parents are teaching the opposite.

Personally, I would love to take the kids sledding on the hill, but, first, it's not my property and, second, they could end up run over.

    gryphon and others--

Sorry the kids cannot sled down our "ski slopes" on our farm property. Our kids had a quite a time when they were out of school recently because of the 4-6 inches of "mess of ice, sleet, snow" we had at our farm.

Of course, one of the twins fell off the sled on the "baby slope" near our home; but she was okay. What do you expect, I guess, for an almost 15 month old. Right? Of course, she was ready to play again, oh well!

    Have fun and be safe--
