for me, safeway is the biggest looser of the super markets of my money around here. Just the fact that they have not put in self checkout lanes alone means I won't stop there anymore. They only have 1 or 2 lanes open ever and it's always SLOOOOW.

I've never waited more then 3 people in Safeway - I don't understand those complaints.

Even in a busy grocery store - you are always going to wait in a line - so why are people freaked out about waiting 2 people?

Sometimes at peak times I've seen lines backed up to the racks, but every time they are cleared out by the time I get back to the front of the store.

i gotta tell you the new harris teeter (southern walk) is hands down better than the other grocery stores in the area (except wegmans, of course!). the people that work there are always friendly. i've never had an issue with things being on the shelves that have expired (like safeway). their meat department sometimes leaves something to be desired, but all in all i think they are pretty good.

also, their pharmacy is fabulous. my husband needed a very expensive prescription recently and they were great about getting it (it's a rare drug and no other pharmacy in the area had all the doses either). they offered me an additional discount because of my VIC card, and i was able to use a coupon. the manager of the pharmacy is a doll, and very knowledgeable.

the safeway i could take or leave. not a big fan.

With the recession deepening with no real plans to turn us around (other than free $800 checks for certain low- and middle-income earners), I will be surprised if we keep half the restaurants that we have now. Of course, some of that will be due to free-market forces working, but some of it will be due to the economy being in shambles.

I agree that the grocery stores will survive. They are all about market penetration.

Safeway is trying to improve. I've noticed the last few times that they've opened up more lanes when it's busy. Harris Teeter is too expensive to do regular weekly shopping in my book.

After repeatedly seeing items that are a week or more out of date, we don't go near Safeway. I think it's a health hazard. We've never had the same thing happen at Wegman's and Harris Teeter, so I have to ask myself why in the world can't Safeway do what they are doing.

When a grocery store is busy that means the fresh foods usually are fresh. So you can look at all of closest grocery stores and none of them are busy. Harris Teeters looks the nicest but in the late evenings the service is slow getting out of the one check out line. I was in there the other evening around 10:30pm and only one young checker that acted new and the line was building up while the manager stood by looking nice. Finally I said can you open another line. And he acted perturbed any finally opened another line.

Personally I don't care about niceness as long as you get good service. Wegmans is the only grocery store that is constantly busy and usually has the freshest food. Our close to grocery stores many times are an joke when it comes to service. And being nice does not make up for poor service.

Home depot over by Shellhorn has yet to make a profit from what I have heard from people working there. How long has it been open 4 or 5 years????????? I agree the high tolls on the greenway is the biggest problem. I am not so sure the metro will help these places at all since most of the development is south of the greenway and there will be more grocery stores and home improvement stores over there.

The metro may be in big trouble in getting final approval and if it does not next week we can kiss it goodbye in our lifetime. What does that mean??? First the large urban centers will be built as an fraction of what is planned. Road improvements will be slow in coming and our property values will not rise much.

Further the money for 55 million dollars in soon to be started road improvements could also be in jeopardy if a court case over turns the new taxes. These improvemnts include pacific and waxpool widening and an new interchange at belmont and rt 7 among others.

We are facing grim fiscal times especially with this brain dead tax relief the pres proposes. If the deficit goes up the immediate effect it could have on our area is government spending cut backs. As we know this area is highly dependent on government spending.

What is really happening is the mortgage crisis which is now effecting the entire banking system as well as the stock market and the countries largest economic engine which is the home building business. When home building declines so does the US economy. So I don't have a clue how a couple hundred of extra dollars will save the economy, it certainly will not make a persons house payments or even one.

The foreclosure vultures are everywhere set up with a lot of foreign money known as vulture funds to ride out the recession. So the well funded vultures will get richer and the middle and upper class will get poorer. BTW I did not invent the name vulture or vulture funds that is what it is called in the industry.

Looks like the party is over here and perhaps we will not see another big party in our lifetimes as the one that is just over. If the metro does not get approved next week loudoun is going to go through some very tough years for many years to come perhaps 15 to 20 or more years or more. There just will be zero money to build any roads for a long time to come either from public or private sources.

I still wonder how they plan to get all the traffic out and in of orbital when they close down the two intersections on 28 later this year when nokes opens.

Pacific will not help and that is several years away if they get funding. ANd Atlantic to church and waxpool which is critical has no funding so another traffic nightmare is about to be born.

i've actually had produce go rotten after 1 day at safeway. opened sealed herbs that smelled like hot trash on the first day. they took them back and refunded me without issue, but i will never buy anything that expires there again. even the milk goes bad befroe the expiration.

but out of convenience and good prices, we still buy things like pop tarts, cereal and progressive soup.

I think the biggest reason they have yet to show a profit is because that particular Home Depot stinks. The customer service stinks, the selection is dirty, etc. We usually go the extra distance to go to Lowes and avoid that store (HD) at all costs. It's just ridiculous how poorly run it is!

I agree Redon1 - I buy all my fresh produce/meat at Wegmans....we eat ALOT of fruits and vegetables so we re-stock a few times a week. I work right across the street from Wegmans, so it's very convenient. For me - I shop at Safeway for the rest....have to get my airlines miles and 10 cents off the gas. :)

Those should be pretty safe! I think a pop tart could survive a nuclear explosion. Delicious... little... processed food things...;)

All Home Depot's have been losing money. They have run that chain into the ground. And the CEO who ran it into the ground is now the new CEO at Chrysler!

I won't debate the academic definition of a recession, as I don't claim to be an economist. However, as a consumer and manager of my family's investments, I can see with my own two eyes the worsening shape of the economy. I think the posts about the under-performing and closing business mentioned in this thread in our area are proof.

Today's announcement of a stimulus plan is too little, too late. Come on, I like the concept of a tax rebate as much as anyone, but what are most people in the Broadlands going to do with a $300 check? Is that money going to go to keeping the businesses afloat? I doubt it.

We need leadership at the helm. Throwing around free checks will not help.

That's assuming you make less than $75k ($150k family). Otherwise, no check for you!
