Speaking of uninformed, the County has does have full-time, PAID firefighters throughout the county.

Last I heard, Ashburn had 2-3 stationed there.

I was calling for some recognition of our hard-working, VOLUNTEER firefighters.

The Dulles extension to Ashburn. As I said in the same post, which I guess you didn't read,I was just playing with you.

I have already explained this at least twice now. I'll explain again. Please read this time, okay?
Again.....no whining being done. I explained what is happening to the ATC system due to the cuts. I also pointed out that many are taking your advice by quitting, retiring, and finding other employment. It is having an impact.
As reported in the Washington Post today, the airline delays last year accounted for over 15 billion dollars being wasted. And it was stated that this estimate was probably low.

It is proper for people such as myself who love their job and career with the FAA, to be upset at the total dismantling of the ATC system by an administration that has no regard for federal workers and wants to pump every available penny into Iraq.
The damage being done will take years to recover from. You can call it a whine, to me it's an expression of sorrow.

So if we give you a raise, we can save 15 billion dollars? Works for me.

Is most of the "low" "15 billion dollar" estimate attributed to inexperience or understaffing of ATC's or is it more likely that general overcrowding of airports and runways, especially at peak times, is more to blame?

I can tell you that a significant amount is due to "low staffing". The buzz word for not enough controllers working and not enough available to call in.
Initiatives to slow down traffic then have to be put in place. That's what I do.
The problem is particularly bad in the New York area, where the new starting salary for a fully certified controller is $70,000. It takes about three years of training to reach that level.
Experienced controllers have been retiring in droves up there.

Either way I do worry about congestion in the future. I think that some form of system should be implemented to make peak arrivals and departures more expensive and off peak should be cheaper to encourage more traffic in less desirable hours. And my more expensive, I mean the gate time for the airlines (which would of course be passed to the consumer). That might encourage less traffic than there is now at peak times.

I know you are an ATC and not an aeronautical engineer or airline owner, but I always wonder why the basic model of commercial air traffic has not changed in almost 40 years. What other barriers other than the sonic bang exist for supersonic flight? Why is there not more point to point traffic on smaller planes?

So if one of my future flights is late without obvious reason, I know who to blame! Now I agree with Gryphon. You want more money just so you can slow things down? Isn't that slightly counterproductive? :p Just kidding, Cliff. As both a traveler and Broadlands resident, I do value your work both professionally and for the HoA.

You missed the point....it's not because we want to slow things down, it's because there are not enough controllers left to do the job.
If air traffic sectors cannot be opened in New York because there aren't enough controllers on duty to staff them, the sectors must be combined up. This puts too much traffic for one controller to handle. So, initiatives must be put in place to slow down the amount of traffic going through those sectors or to those airports.

Fuel Economy - its not until the latest generation jet fighters that planes could run super sonic WITHOUT afterburners. The F-22 is the first production craft that includes this ability. afterburners destroy fuel efficency and therefore when combined with the reduced payload and increased fuel costs its not effective. Then you have the problem of noise pollution and people not liking having a sonic boom roll over.

Economies of Scale. More people per plane = more heads to diffuse the fixed cost of cycling a plane.

Cliff, I understood your point and was just trying to make a joke is all. My apologies if I didn't come off that way. The ATC situation is clear and I am sympathetic to it. As a traveler, I'd rather be delayed a little than fall victim to an understaffed disaster.

Just as a side note, the Quizno's in the Broadlands closed because the two partners got into a fight and could not get along. According to the Quizno's owner by the skating rink.
