    Hi All,

We've been trying to troubleshoot things in the background now for awhile on a particular topic that appears sportatically.

    Symptom:
After hitting submit on your new post, the webpage takes a very long time to respond and redraw showing your new post. This does not happen all the time, just some of the time.

If you experience this please make note of the following
    - Do not hit stop, or reload or anything like that in your browser. Let it finish, it will redraw the page eventually. Longest I've seen is about 1.5 minutes. Usually its about 30 seconds.
    - Please remember how you were posting.
    • What this a new thread?
    • Were you replying to an existing thread? If so, were you using the quick reply box at the bottom of the page, or were you using the editor that takes up the full page?

I've made a slight change right now that means after you post a new thread, or message via the editor, you now get a page that says you will be redirected shortly. If you experience the slowdown still, please be sure to tell us if you saw the slowdown BEFORE this redirect page showed, or AFTER the redirect page loaded.

We are trying to squash this slowdown, but its been very hard to reproduce or track. If you see this behavior, please post to this thread with the details from above and note which thread you were posting in.

    Thank you

Steve, I have been replying using the Quick Reply button on existing threads. Right after I post, I get the following message...then it scrolls for about 20 seconds before posting.

Thank you for posting! You will now be taken to your post. If you opted to post a poll, you will now be allowed to do so.
Click here if your browser does not automatically redirect you.

I just got the annoying redirect page ... seems like the ajax stuff has been turned off or something.

this reply used the ajax PostBit routine, but my response in the "random kids arrested in bmw on claiborne" post was slow...

delete the the Broadlands Hospital thread and see if it speeds things up ;)

No, that's a bad idea in general. That's the major cause of double/duplicate posts...

When you purchase something online and submit your order, you don't go back and submit again; please don't do that here. Thanks.

Ok, got the slow post just now:

    Firefox browser on a Mac

Pressed submit button on the quick reply/post window (not the advanced one) at 13:46. Saw the Thanks for posting redirect page/window, and page kept loading for over 2 minutes before being taken back to the thread with my post.

This was in the No FiOS in 2006, Maybe 2007 thread.

any recent changes on the server? have the db tables been checked/indexes rebuilt/etc? trying to think what would make it delay that long. Doesn't vbulletin have a debug mode for the server side profiling?

(this quick reply only took 760ms)

Cool - this in part confirms my suspcions. The last piece of the puzzle to nail the full symptom is getting a sniff while this happens, to understand where the pause in the second page is.. server side or client side. The redirect page's purpose is it splits the posting process from the display process. Obviously here its the showthread.php process is where the hang up is - we just can't nail down just yet which side is pausing.

yes, yes, yes, :) This has been in the process of troubleshooting long before this thread was opened and the redirect change. The debug info is inconclusive for the actual cause, as well as other monitoring we have done. Since our forum is customized (as nearly EVERY site is), its hard to get specific support without reverting the entire site and waiting for it to happen. Plus, since its not consistent, per the content OR the load on the server, its been very troublesome to nail down. Other sites are seeing it as well, but the developers claim ignorance of there possibly being a problem here :censored::censored:

we've made some minor changes again today, including removing the redirect page again.. please pass along any reports you see on the slowdown.

    Thanks

My last post (about 1 minute ago) in the "Did you/will you vote today" thread took about 15 seconds to process. My post included an attached .jpg file, so that may explain the slowdown. I had already uploaded the picture through "manage attachments," though, so I would have expected the post to process faster.

HUGE issues posting in the past 20 minutes. Each post (quick reply, including an embedded quote) took over 1.5 minutes to process.

Could the 'embedded quote' information be causing the slowdown? For others seeing this issue, does it occur regardless of if you are quoting a previous posting or not?

    Hello Again!

We've made some further tweaks last night which looked promising in our testing. PLEASE let us know if your posting is any better now then it's been in the past and if you're having any slow delays while posting (and an approximate amount of time it took).

    Thank you!

I was just posting in the thread Staci started about Del Ray having brunch and it took about 20 seconds to post. I was quoting Villager, but not attaching anything.

For what it's worth, I continue to have delays with my post replies. I just replied to one using the quote and reply features and it took about 30 seconds to load. This is typical of my experience on the board.

FYI: My previous post about post delays took about 35 seconds to load. No smilies, quotes, or other extras.

I'm not complaining, just giving feedback. :)
