Cliff or anyone else on the HOA -

would you guys be angry if residents called VDOT to have some more Caution Children Playing signs put in towards the entrance of our cul-de-sac? I did this in the last community I lived in and VDOT (as well as HOA) happily obliged our request. The speeding down the cul-de-sac either by residents or people lost trying to get out of the neighborhood is getting out of hand. The only Caution Children Playing sign in our area is the one located on Stone Hollow.

We have childen's lives at stake here....let's not wait for an accident to make changes.

Do you think the signs will actually help deter speeding?

I would prefer signs that read "not a through street" or "dead end" The speed limit should be reduced to 5-10mph AND parents should not allow their kids to play in the street.

I am extremely cautious and careful yet time and again kids are riding bikes without helmuts and playing in the streets "unsupervised". Children are playing and having fun - not paying attention to traffic.

And mostly it is the residents speeding in and out of the streets - the same folks that have small children also.

I would have no issues with this, as long as this was a street maintained by VDOT and not the HOA. If it's a 'private' road, i.e. HOA maintained, then you would have to forward your request to the HOA directly.

Quick and dirty way to figure it out if you're unsure, is to see who plows your street in the winter; VDOT or a private contractor?

The signs are something...since speed bumps and humps are not allowed in Loudoun County. Agreed that residents should be more cautious, but short of standing in the middle of my cul-de-sac to slow down residents (which I have done), what other option do we have? Kids will be kids. They want to have fun and by nature they're going to throw caution to the wind. The signs that VDOT posts are bright yellow and at least serve as a reminder to drivers that there are kids present. Yes, a dead end sign might help deter the lost drivers, but it's mostly residents (and I'm not saying just the residents in the cul-de-sac) that are careless with their speed.

As far as not playing in the street - did you never play in a court??? And my kids are riding their bikes, scooters, tricycles in the street (which is legal) and ALWAYS with an adult present and ALWAYS with helmets. Occasionally there's a "game" of kicking or throwing a ball. Doesn't matter if the kifd should be playing in the streets or not....people need to slow down.

Our bit of the cul-de-sac is still not VDOT maintained, but the rest of the road is. The sign would hopefully be placed at the beginning of the cul-de-sac or on the roads just before the cul-de-sac.

Ok, go that route with VDOT; if they come back and say "no", contact me and I'll see what we can do. At this point, I just realized that even if the street is HOA maintained, the "pole" might still be VDOT, so they would still be the ones to contact. I'm unsure about the specifics, but I'll see what I can do to find out for you, since this is something I wouldn't mind possibly getting on our street as well...

Streets are either VDOT or private...I don't ounderstand what you mean by "...our bit of the cul-de-sac..." If you would like to PM your street name I can you if it is VDOT or private.

that's what i see too- teens have not been the issue on the roads where i see the worst offenders. but a sign for speeding does as much as a sign for dog poop. responsible residents don't speed thru the neighborhood- not b/c of a sign, but b/c they DRIVE LIKE THEIR OWN KID COULD BE THE ONE RUNNING OUT FROM BETWEEN 2 CARS AFTER A BALL.

inconsiderate and irresponsible speeders will drive that way regardless of a sign. they will have to hit someone/something, be ticketed or be shamed by their neighbors before they will change their lousy driving habits.

or peeps just zooming into their garage at the end of the cul-de-sac. Well Ridgeway is 25, and I sometimed think I'm the only person who pays attention to it!

Then short of posting license plates and car make/model, what the heck are we supposed to do? Minivan drivers, SUV drivers, older drivers, teen drivers, whoever the heck is driving slow the :censored: down!!

Signs won't work, speed bumps don't work, lowering the speed limit is like asking for snow at the equator, cops won't patrol neighborhood streets (unless you specifically call and request them for something............). What are residents supposed to do?

I drive 5 mph UNDER the speed limit on the neighborhood streets because of the fact there are children playing. How many times have I had to hit the brakes because of kids playing basketball in their driveway and the ball gets loose and rolls into the road? Numerous times. Do I complain that kids are playing in out front near a street? NO. I purposefully slow down even more every time I drive by that particular house.

    Just be considerate people.

Please, please, please don't post license plates and car make/model info on these forums... We've been down that road before and we would rather not go through all that turmoil again... :rolleyes3:

Sad but soooo true - the mom's in minivans are the worst offenders! We were passed on Ridgeway this morning by a woman in a minivan...and I've been passed twice while going 25 mph - the SPEED LIMIT!!!! Sorry but I'm really fed up with this issue...I know when you come off Claiborne at 45+mph that it's hard to remember to slow down. BUT PLEASE - people's safety and lives are at stake.

the sad part is that the worst offenders are not likely people who freequent these forums- most of us in here are somehow involved in or invested in improving this community. if you are a speeder and you are in here- you likely will be more concious of the way you drive b/c you read these good points and know you are wrong. and you will improve for at least a short while.

but i would bet MONEY that the vast majority of the self-centered, self-absorbed, self-ISH people who drive with no one else's safety in mind aren't frequenting the community HOA forum...

    just a hunch. :)

Not trying to generalize here.....I have always noticed the vehicles to/from Ridgeway at the 4-way stop sign (claiborne-ridgeway-wynridge) either driving super-fast and/or skip the stop-signs. Just today morning around 9:30 AM, a mini-van did not even slow down at the stop-sign (let alone stop) before making a left onto Ridgeway (coming from Claiborne).

Like the rest have already mentioned here, mini-van's are the worst offenders when it comes to speeding, and not stopping at the stop signs. I am sure there are folks like the poster above who drive below the speed limit and are extra cautious, but a significant #. of vehicles to/from ridgeway doesn't obey some simple traffic rules!

Is there anything that can be done as a community? Maybe have the Londoun County Sherriff's office post some officers along Ridgeway during the peak times to deter folks from driving crazily at least for a few weeks?

I think I've posted on this before but the only thing I can think to do is to get the plates and report them to the Loudoun County sheriff. I know many people would say that we should not "bother" the police with just a speeder but when I approached the police with the license of a driver that was driving dangerously in the neighborhood, they were EXTREMELY helpful and appreciative. I have even seen where they have posted officers along the route I described.

I am very afraid that we are going to have a tragedy so I would rather "bother" the police than have it happen.

I keep my child on the sidewalk and she is old enough to know not to run in the street. My fear is that someone racing as fast as they do will lose control and come up on the sidewalk.

Here's a link to the traffic complaint form.

i would actually be willing to VOLUNTEER to be on a phone line that calls and informs ppl that they've been rptd for speeding thru neighborhoods and are on notice that their fine would be TRIPLED if caught since they've rcvd a warning.

coffee, donuts, a phone and a list of numbers- count me IN!

Don't worry...I'm not suggesting that option.
