Speeding in cul-de-sacs

You let your children rides bikes on a narrow pathway that is more frequented by walkers?

Isn't that dangerous?!

So far I have been able to accidently keep one alive for 9 years. I'll try harder with the 4 year old.

Mine is still alive and a I do occasionally allow her out of my sight. Either I am very lucky or I don't suck so bad as a mom. She's a pretty cautious chick and level headed, which (fingers crossed) will serve her well when she:
A: starts driving in 6 months (OMG)
B: goes to college in 3 years (and you all KNOW what I am talking about). If I didn't ever let out the rope she would not posses the life and coping skills to live as an independent adult. I don't know about Gryph, but I want her out of the house at some point. (tho I will have to be heavily medicated when I drop her off at college).

I had a house on my street and it was a daycare, and the tenant routinely let them play in the street, unsupervised, around a blind corner (she also had about 50 kids it would seem). I cringed and went about 2 mph every time ... THAT's how NOT to do it.

Our kids play in both places. Everyone that lives on our street LOVES the fact that all the kids play in the street. No one has a problem slowing down in a culdesac. Period. People are happy to see all the kids playing together, having fun, being active.

With that logic, the drunk is just as likely to veer up onto the sidewalk or into my yard. And the kids are just about as likely to get hit by a falling tree branch in the back yard.

Lighten up, and enjoy your kids childhood!

I am sorry you had a bad experience in your community in your youth - but STOP JUDGING all the normal people....

 

My kids don't play on my street. I live on Ridgeway Drive- nuff said. We play in the front yard and in the driveway. People drive too fast on our road for me to feel comfortable roadside.

BTW, is there a speed limit sign posted on Ridgeway? I don't think there is one aside from the school crossing flashing yellow light signs that say "20" on them. It's 25mph on Ridgeway.
Just an observation, a lot of people that live up Ridgeway and off of it on their cul-de-sacs and such don't have any problem flying past my house. I am totally not directing that at anyone here. But a LOT of people come flying down that hill.
We have to cross Ridgeway to get to the sidewalk since we don't have one on our side of the street. So many speed-racers! Even the buses go super fast!

oh oh, i was slightly off-topic. It is my opinion that kids in cul-de-sacs are safe with vigilant parental supervision. "anything less would be uncivilized."

 

That is the funny thing ... I have noted more and more Buses flying around Broadlands ... I will definitely take step and call the number to report them .... You would think they would obey the speed limit ... UPS truck .. Fedex truck that is one thing but ..SCHOOL BUSES !!!?!

 

A quick and easy solution:

Call the Loudoun County Sherriff's Traffic Safety Office at 703-771-5798 (choose Option 1). The more complaints they receive about a specific street or area, the better chance there is to have them step up their patrols. Provide them with as much detail as possible (times/street name)

 

i noticed cops patrolling chickacoan both before and after school the other day- that's a good start! even occasional presence is a good deterrent for those speeders- you never know when a cop could be lurking...

 

someone must have done something - for a few days there has been LCSO speed monitor on Ridgeway (near the elem school)

Last night we watched a dark colored Acura MDX clock in at 47MPH on Ridgeway, as the speed flashed RED they speed up - that's 22 OVER the posted speed limit. But nothing beats the green porche @ 62 MPH on Tuesday night.

My guess is the LSCO has the radar/speed indicator collecting data and in a few short weeks we will see patrol cars writing up tickets.
