I am looking for someone to make a cake for my son's first birthday party. I'd like to avoid places like Giant and Costco. I had something from Chantel's a few years ago and wasn't impressed. Can anyone offer any recommendations?

    Thanks!

I know you're already planning on avoiding the grocery stores. If you are considering them even for a second, avoid the Safeway bakery at all costs. They almost ruined my son's birthday. When I went to pick up the cake we had ordered (48 hours before), not only was it not ready, but they did not even have the theme we had ordered. So I looked through the book and chose another theme-out of that too. I picked 5 themes they did not have from the book-finally ended up asking them what they DID have. I had to settle for fish-this was a 2 year old boys birthday, but I was SOL b/c we were about 2 hours from the start of the party... I did end up complaining to corporate Safeway-birthday was in February and I'm still awaiting a response...

I've ordered from Chantel's in the past and was pleased but probably won't order from them again - cost, convenience, etc. For our last birthday party, we used the Giant bakery in Ashburn Farms. The bakery manager, Kathy (Kathleen) is great. I took an invitation to her and she copied the design exactly onto the cake. The cake was moist and the icing wasn't icky sweet. I'd order another cake from her in a heartbeat.

Duff from Charm City Cakes did our wedding cake....incredible! He's actually going to be on the Food Network wedding cake challenge.

There's also a place in Reston Town center called Edibles Incredible. It's right next to the Wachovia. They have DELICIOUS homemade cakes. They put real raspberries and strawberries in the cakes. I recommend them. :)703-709-8200

Try Amphora in Herndon. Their cakes are sooooooo good but a little on the expensive side. But way cool.
