I would gladly welcome your feedback on opticians in the area, specifically regarding:

    • eyewear selection (i.e., quality, quantity, style, etc.)
    • technicians' expertise for fitting glasses
    • convenient hours
Where have you had good experiences? Bad experiences? Thanks!

Maureen - you mentioned kids - do you know how young they will work with? I'm having a heck of a time finding someone local for glasses for my 14 month old. His first pair are from Alexandria and I dread making that trip again.

Mine didn't wear glasses until elementary school, but call and ask. Dr. Hinkle is especially patient. My daughter is super sensitive to having her eyes touched and he spent at least an hour with her until she felt comfortable with the exam...They have all the latest technology in the office so it seems they should be equipped for pediatric exams too...

Hi, everyone. Just to clarify... I've already got a good optometrist (i.e., an eye doctor). What I'm looking for are opticians (i.e., those who sell and fit eyeglasses).

Lenscrafters is okay, but I'm taking suggestions for alternatives.... an establishment with a good selection of frames and outstanding expertise in the fitting of eyeglasses.

I've got one eye higher than the other. I've also got one ear really higher than the other. Simply stated, I've got an asymmetrical head that requires an eyeglass technician who really knows what they're doing.... and I have yet to find someone in this area with the right skill set.

    Thanks!

If you haven't tried them yet, I go to the one over in Ashburn Village Plaza. They have a pretty good assortment of frames and a couple of very good fitters. And they're great at getting the Rx right!

I second that - I've been going to them for years for both exams and glasses (www.ashburneyecare.com). I'm picking up a new pair of prescription sunglasses today, actually; their frame selection is huge and includes lots of kids' sizes. David is a great optician, and I think he's there most days.

We use Costco(Leesburg). They have been great. My husband, myself and my 10 year old son all get our glasses from there. I think it is convenient b/c I'm always there, and whenever I'm there I get them adjusted. I don't know if they are more/less expensive then other places, but like I said, I like the convenience.

I hated the office in the Village Plaza, the doctor and staff were rushed and rude and disorganized. I loved the office next to the HT's by the Village/Ashbrook plaza.

    goofus and others--

Our family of 8 uses May & Hettler Optometry and their practice has 6 different locations. Great doctors and great with kids. They will see young kids as young as 18 months--I believe. Convenient hours on Saturday and late weeknight hours.

    Web site is--

    www.forsightusa.com (May & Hettler's site/info.)

Great selections of eyewear and has good service as well as files your insurance claims.

We've been happy with both of the doctors at Loudoun Eye Associates. They are located in the Ryan Park Commercial Center (the one with Panera, Red Robin etc). Their phone #is (703)724-0330.

I recommend Dr. Keith Smithson, of Northern VA Doctors of Optometry. Here is his link. http://www.novaeyedocs.com/doctors.php Dr. Smithson specialises in sports vision for children and adults. My husband loves him and he is a kind and caring guy. Well worth the short ride to reston on the toll rd.

He is the team optometrist for the Washington Wizards, Washington Nationals and DC United. Dr. Smithson has also served as a sports vision consultant for the Baltimore Ravens, Washington Freedom, Washington Mystics and Nike. He is available for sports vision consultations for serious athletes of all ages who are seeking an extra edge in athletic performance through vision enhancement. He also conducts visual and perceptual therapy for children experiencing difficulty in school, and for adults with computer vision eyestrain or focusing problems. Dr. Smithson is a member of the Sports Vision section of the American Optometric Association and the Virginia Optometric Association.

    Hope this helps.

I use Dr. Mcgrew in Leesburg by the Ben Franklin of Catoctin, good selection of frames and prices are decent. I just lost my glasses and have been blind for a week but did not want to spend to much since I'm getting contacts in a few weeks. I found ForEyes in sterling by Burlington and got 2 pairs for $99.00. You can upgrade the lenses wich I did but I still only paid $250 with transitional lenses for both glasses.

I am in need of a good optometrist who can get the RX right. I wear bi-focals and the last time I got a pair, it just didn't work out. This thread is old, so I would like to get current feedback. Thanks.
