One of our children was very far advanced in terms of her school abilities from an early age and she has a late birthday.

Based on her situation, we sent her to a private Kindergarten because the public school age cut-off with the information that the public schools recognized the kindergarten and she would be allowed to go to first grade the following year.

As it turned out, the public school insisted on testing her (fine..) but changed the story multiple times on when they would test her (starting from beginning of summer, to middle, to end, to 2 weeks into school!!!). They even wanted to put her in kindergarten again, and after testing her, then move her up. After some diligence by msflynn, we got her tested and placed into first grade at the start of the year. But it wasn't necessarily as smooth a situation as we were initially lead to believe.

I think, like everything, it depends on your situation. My son has a late Sept birthday, but I went ahead and put him in kindergarten, with the attitude that I'd let him repeat if necessary. It wasn't necessary. He's a senior this year and I feel his age hasn't affected him at all. I like that he is younger, he didn't get his learners until he was a junior and didn't start driving full time until his senior year. I couldn't imagine him driving to school as a junior. As for grades, he's always done well. The only draw back that I can see is he'll still be 17 when he goes to college in the fall, although, Im sure he'll be fine.

Do you happen to know what price range they are in? I tried to call them, but they wont give out prices over the phone. I would like to know if I can afford it before spending 30 minutes+ on a tour of something that I can't afford

Goddard is a full-day kindergarten program, from 9am-3pm. The fee is $1107/month. If you use their before and after care, anytime between 7am-6pm, the fee is $1170/month ($63 more per month).

I am the SchwarzFamily friend, the distressed mom with the son whose birthday is September 29th. I want to thank them for posting my concern, and to everyone who has taken the time to reply to it. It has helped me realize that each child and his/her experience is individual, and that it really doesn't matter what age a child is when he/she starts Kindergarten or his/her age compared to his/her classmates. I am going with my gut (and the advice of his teacher) that tells me that my son is ready now. We are sending him to Goddard's kindergarten program, where he is currently enrolled in their pre-k program. He has done well there and he likes it. Thanks especially to cmbm for the great list.
