I heard on WTOP yesterday that there was a gang fight in Leesburg involving 2 gangs. One was from Ashburn and the other was from Leesburg. They were using Cricket bats and they think it was a "turf war". Did anyone read or hear anything about this?

    No, but...

    hahahaha...were they English gangs?

"HOY! GET OUT OF ME TURF, MATE...OR I'LL DO YOU RIGHT UP WITH ME CRICKET BAT!"

At least they weren't using guns. :)

From what I've heard, there haven't been any arrests in that incident yet. But I know a whole bunch of people were cited at Stone Bridge High School late the other night meeting for a "gang" fight-kids from Ashburn Farm, Village and Broadlands. I know I'm going to take a lot of flak for this but, seriously, where are the parents?

This is just pathetic. Farm/Village/Broadlands 'rumble'? Does anyone else not find the audacity in this? A bunch of suburban kids in a West Side Story/Anchorman showdown...hah.

"I'm from the streets, yo...I came up hard in the 20148, son! Them 20147 playas is wack!"

I get the same kinda humorous feeling about this that I got when I found out Vanilla Ice was really some poser rich kid from the suburbs. I agree with you about the parents tho.

Don't feel bad about asking that question, I ask it often. I see young kids (9 and younger) playing in common areas, completely out of sight of their parents house. I know you can't lock kids in a house 24/7 but when I see these kids so far from their house and without supervision from adults (or even older kids), all I think about are those postcards you get in the mail that has pictures of missing kids...

This is kind of funny since friday night me and the wife ran to mobil real quick and on our way back we were driving down waxpool and just after passing claiborne I was like, what is that (something up ahead in the middle of the street). She was like, I think its people, so I tell her to put on the high beams, and its about 7 or 8 middle school to high school kids walking in the middle of the road. If she had not put on the high beams to see them she may have seen them to late. So after she flashes they all turn around and then as we pass a few of them put there hands up and lunged at the car like we were the ones doing something wrong. So when we got home we called the police to inform them they may be getting a " I ran over some kids in the middle of the road call". I tell you what though my high school and college instincts kicked in and I wanted to get out of the car but then I remembered my wife and daughter and the fact that kids in Ashburn think they are in Compton or Brooklyn. My wife works at the Loudoun Youth shelter and you would be amazed at the severity of this gang problem in the area.

Was this Sunday night? I live on Merion and we just experienced minor vandalism Sunday night. Based on neighbor accounts (when people went to sleep and what not), it had to have occurred between 3AM and 6:30 AM. Mostly plants (mine! :( ) strewn about and a few mail boxes were dented with shovels. My neighbors rock garden (and some of them weigh 100 lbs) were moved all over. We called the cops and made a report, but really what can they do. I guess we should be thankful nothing "major" happened, but it really does pi$$ me off. :(

hah, thug life, yo! I can imagine they had the hands in the air thing saying 'WHAT!? WHAT NOW!'

Keep a bag of all purpose flour in the car and the next time a punk gives you any guff, make a u-turn and throw it out the window at them (from my high school days). :)

Overland Park, in Broadlands has been experiencing some disturbing vandalism in recent weeks. Vandalism occured last weekend and just last night (8/8).

The vandalism included, fires being set in the middle of a few intersections. The Fire investigator reported that the vandals used "molotov ****tails." Rahter disturbing. About 3/4 of new installed white fences were spray painted and/or had their fence post caps knocked off. Vulgarities were spray painted on the street and sidewalk on Overland Park Drive. All of that took place last weekend, I belive. The vandalism that occured last night involved lawn ornaments and a sprinkler. I still don't know much about what happened last night, but the police were called.

So, do any of you think this vandalism is gang related?

I said from my high school days, when nobody was packing heat. I wouldn't do it nowadays, but back then it sure was funny.

I attended a meeting with Congressman Frank Wolf yesterday who was giving some disturbing figures about gangs in Northern Virginia. While most of the activities are in Herndon/Reston/Fairfax, etc that is still very close to us. There were 42 gang members arrested in Woodstock and 24 arrested in New MArket. This is very shocking since those areas are VERY rural. If we don't want gangs to be a problem here we need to get involved. While a neighborhood watch won't stop all the vandalism, etc it might stop our "bad teens" from getting a hold on our community. While I applaud the residents who have stepped up to the plate to help with the neighborhood watch, we are far short of the amount of community members we need to make this successful. If you have other suggestions about stopping the small problems we have now,(before they escalate into big problems) please let me know. The best way to keep our area safe is by getting involved.

“Gangsters” no… “Bored-unsupervised-kids” is the correct term. Despite what VTK THS @VT’s wife’s experience was, the "bad" kids living in Ashburn are not gangsters. Do they have home problems, are they causing trouble, vandalism, etc? Yes they are, but gangsters they are not. My wife and mother-in-law have “served” several years teaching in a notorious Loudoun County alternative school. Sure the kids wear baggy jeans and their hats sideways, but these are not card-carrying members of MS-13, Crips, Bloods, etc. “Wanna-bees”... yes…gangsters…..no. Real gangsters chop of hands in Springfield, commit drivebys in DC, and traffic narcotics throughout the region / country.

The “pranks” in Ashburn are products of “two income – no parents home” households. Sure, call the police when appropriate. However, the real solution to this problem is for parents to talk with their children, ask questions, set curfews, and most importantly take interest in their lives.

One last thought…..I’ve seen threads about what to do with the Broadlands nature center when not in use. Ideas included pottery classes, yoga, etc. These are all fine and good, but if the community is truly concerned about teenage delinquency, and would like to be proactive, why not use the center for Friday / Saturday night teenage get-togethers. And no, I’m not talking about square-dancing or apple eating contests. I’m talking about filling the place with computers, video games, movies, arcade games, and a lounge for kids to just “hang”. If this isn’t practical in the nature center, build a new facility that is. Surely with the wealth of this community and HOA, we have some money set aside to benefit our children. Don’t we?

You want kids off the street and not causing trouble, give them something to do in Suburbia!
