has anyone heard what sounds like a small plane this morning? i've heard this weird noise for about 40 min. now and it sounds like a small plane but i don't see anything (not surprising given the weather!). and no i haven't been drinking. it was loud enough to wake me up and even go outside. very strange.

I think I heard it. Was it powering up, then powering down, then powering up again, going on for awhile? If so, woke me up! I couldn't figure out what it was either...

What time, there is a small plane that frequently flies over early in the morning, out of Leesburg Airport.

I definitely heard it (I'm not normally up at 5:21am if I can help it but I actually got up around 4:35 because of it). I couldn't figure out if it was a plane or someone trying to warm up their car (revving the engine, etc). Guess it was a plane if you heard it, too. No idea what it would be doing...

Yes, it's a private plane, single engine, taking off from Leesburg Airport, I think it someone who lives in the NOVA area commuting to Norfolk. But I'm not 100% sure. Talk about a haul everyday. There is a FAA flight planning log on the web, you can look at it.

if you heard a constant engine noise that early in the morning powering up and down over about an hour in the general direction of Dulles, then it was one of the commuter airlines or flight services operators over at Dulles doing some routine checkout/maintenance on an engine on their commuter airliners. Happens all the time.
