I guess my diet is working...I'll probably need to have my platinum wedding band sized down some in the near future and was looking for recommendations on local/close jewlers that can do this for me. I'm not talking about Zales/Jared/etc, but reputable jewlers that do good quality repair work. From what I've read, it's fairly difficult to resize platinum (you can either compress it or cut/weld...I'd like compression) so I'm looking for someone established, reputable, and knowledgable...doesn't have to be local, but in 'the metro area'.

Furthermore, has anyone ever sized platinum down? What did the resulting ring look like? I'm worried they're going to screw it up no matter where I go. :(

    Thanks.

Mervis Diamond Importers is awesome. They have sized several of my platinum rings and I have always been pleased.

    Brim,

I recently started using Ketterman's in Leesburg. I have been happy with the work they have done to date.

I have had a platinum ring downsized. It was a ring of my dad's and needed substantial reduction. I think it looks fine but there is a seam. I am not sure if the seam is a by-product of the amount it needed to be downsized or because the ring is a two tone ring made of platinum and yellow gold.

Let me know how you like Ketterman's

Thanks for the info thus far, anyone else?

The only thing I've managed to find on the web is this thread on another board:

    http://www.diamondtalk.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=8853

The one guy says it should take about 5min to compress one, then polish it. I'd like to find someplace that does this in-house and doesn't rely on sending it out to be completed.

I second Mervis-they do an excellent job (my platinum rings actually had to be sized up-they had shrunk over the years :D). You can't tell they've been messed with. And I believe it was relatively affordable too.

I sent Mervis an email asking about procedures/costs for sizing down and have yet to hear back from them. Judging from the size of the Tyson's store, they should have all the equipment to do this on-site...did you have to leave your stuff with them? If so, how quick did they get it back to you?

I just called Mervis and they won't work on anything that's not a 'Mervis Piece'. They did recommend Towne Silver & Goldsmith in Tysons (http://www.townejewelry.com/ web store only). I noticed that they also have a store in Dulles Town Center. I don't know anything about these folks (or any other jeweler). Does anyone?
