I as heck hope the special assessment would NOT be very high for single family homes! :(

It will depend if you are on a VDOT street or HOA maintained street.
The Board hasn't made a decision on this, we will be discussing it.
The bill has to be paid either way. A one time fee, or increase in monthly assessments.

    Hello,

My husband and I would personally support a special assessment. That was one heck of a winter, and we are grateful for the snow-removal services we received.

    Thanks,
    Laura

I too am for a special assesment.

I imagine HOA fees could be like taxes, if you raise them for something special, they may not ever go away/back down! :D

I don't want to see a special assesment or an increase. Unless you can break down the costs for plowing the Community Center, Nature Center I don't see a need for the homeowners on VDOT streets to pay for the plowing that was done on HOA streets.

What time do you think this item will come up for discussion? I have a prior commitment and would not make it to the meeting until after 7:30PM and I would like to see homeowners that received no benefits of the HOA snowplows be able to object to paying for this.

    Concur.

Some things are commual costs - not cost per consumer. To argue that EVERYTHING only be paid for by those that use it makes things unreasonable and you lose your economies of scale.

And such an assessment isn't just about HOA streets. In case you didn't notice all the other damage, etc done around the place.

It amazes me that people don't want to be part of a community when it comes to paying their share... but if someone were to fall on their plate alone they'd be looking for all their friends right away.

What's next... 'I don't drive on claibourne, I don't think I should pay for landscaping on that street'. Come on folks - scale helps ALL of us. Don't be so selfish.

That is exactly what we are looking at doing. You already pay into the common area expenses that cover the plowing of the Community Center, Nature Center and community paths. The bill has to be paid by all homeowners for those areas (they are common area expenses) so it is either a special assessment or it is an increase in dues. As for the homes that are on private streets that have HOA plowing they will be assessed the common area costs plus the overage.

As for the meeting - it starts at 6 I am not sure how late we will go. If you do not think you can make it you may send a letter to the HOA board that can be distributed at the meeting, you can send an email out to all board members or if you PM me I am happy to give you my phone number and you can call me on your way to see if we are still meeting.

I agree and we would also support a special assessment. The HOA's contractor did an outstanding job during last winter's record breaking storms.

The contractor did NOT take care of the sidewalks on the common area near where we live.

I'm on Glebe View - at the corner of Glebe View and Vestals Gap that area belongs to the HOA. This came up because I was investigating another bus stop for my daughter since the homeowners at our usual stop never shoveled out the sidewalks at that end of the street (despite my knocking on their door and reporting them to the county). Unfortunately, we couldn't get to the alternate bus stop because the HOA sidewalks weren't cleared either. I ended up driving my kid to a friend's home for a week to walk the rest of the way to school.

There's a previous discussion about this somewhere on the boards that I had with Staci.

I certainly agree that if you increase the HOA fee, it will never go back down. They'll find something to spend the money on.

However, since there is already some money in our HOA fee to cover snow removal, what happens if we get a winter with little to no snow? Should there be a "special refund" for the homeowners? I have to imagine that we don't spend all our snow money every single year, so since we don't get a refund, shouldn't that money be banked to cover heavy winters like the one we just had so there's no need for a special assessment?

We are currently discussing creating a carryover fund for the future that would roll the snow budget from year to year if not used. There are some accounting related issues around this - but believe we can work around those and ensure these funds dont roll over into the general fund.
