My husband and I are planning on taking our little ones down Skyline Drive for some leaf peeping next weekend and I was hoping someone could recommend a place to stay the night. I realize it's a big area to cover but we are open to anything so long as there is running water! Thanks!

You may have better luck leaving the park for lodging. For Skyline Drive, Front Royal, Harrisonburg, & Waynesboro (btw, there's an entry fee--good for a week--and traffic probably will be madness on a weekend).

You might also want to consider driving down US-29 and picking up the Blue Ridge Parkway south of Waynesboro and stay in Lexington, Buena Vista, or Lynchburg.

    Have fun!

A bit further down the road is Cave Mountain Lake (off 81), it rarely fills up, very clean there, the camp sites are great. There isn't a ton of stuff to do, but they do have a "beach" at the lake, kids can catch these little salamanders and build sand castles for them. We biked a bit, Devil's Marbleyard is closeby, although probably not good for wee ones. Our kids had fun just being by the fire, drinking cocoa and eating smores. Most campsites have a bubbling brook nearby, it's lovely there. Get there before 10pm. It's only $15 for the night!!

Those all sound great - especially the camping when the boys get a little older! I ended up booking a room in Luray - we'll hit the caverns too. Thanks for the pointers!
