Well, our lower level AC unit is out. Based on the symptoms, it is likely the capacitor (I'm getting pretty good at replacing these). Of course, the HVAC stores are closed until Tuesday so I figured it couldn't hurt to ask if anyone has a spare capacitor to sell. I will either reimburse or buy you a new one.

The part number is GE B98457-5600 and the specs are: 5.0+40.0uF Voltage: 440V 50/60Hz.

If anyone has an extra one and willing to sell, please let me know.

    Thanks in advance.

I think home depot carries universal ones. In that range.

I had looked at HD last year when our upper AC unit crashed and they did not carry them. I just tried again and they, unfortunately, still don't carry them.
Only one more day and last night helped cool things down.

Sorry, just saw this. Could have helped you out. I keep extras. Mine are 35+5 but it would have worked just fine.

    pauleyc,
Thanks! I picked one up, installed it and the downstairs is getting cooler as we speak.

Obviously this information is too late to help you now, but Grainger offers a service where they will open the store during closed hours for a $50 fee to sell a part you need. I used this last summer when my capacitor failed on the weekend. I think I will buy a spare to keep on hand.

When I picked up the part at Grainger the morning, the rep said he was in over the weekend for an emergency need. I did not know they did that. That's pretty nice.

However, a little extra heat and sweat in our house this weekend helps us appreciate the AC that much more. Plus, we had a fan going and it never truly got too uncomfortable.

Does this problem cause the unit to not work at all or just not cool air? We recently got the lower level unit charged up and was working fine. Now it is blowing air, just not cool air.

Go out to the unit and see if its frozen over, check the lines inside as well.

They aren't frozen which leads me to believe it isn't low on freon.

I am rharse's wife, and I can tell you that our experience was that it was blowing air, but just not blowing COOL air. The unit wasn't completely dead.

Thanks for the answers. I gave it a shot this morning by changing the capacitor, which was cheap and easy. Looks like the problems run a little deeper though.

Yep, coil was gone so we are waiting on a full replacement. Good news is I have a couple of working capacitors if someone comes across a need in the near future.

Looking for an extra AC capacitor. Does anyone have an extra one that we can purchase? We need one to fit a Goodman.

Thanks to our wonderful neighbor, we borrowed a capacitor and made it through the weekend! Then we purchased a new one Monday for $17 and replaced it ourselves.

Replace "week" with "year" and that's what we did. We loved working with Climatic.

The price we paid to have the capacitor installed for us was, uh, a little more than $17.00. ;)
