Hello, my family and I are new here and are looking for a local (Ashburn or close by) community/non-denominational christian church... Not mega church or anything just good church with good people maybe with quirky bent and who get and understand grace. My wife plays drums and I play bass so we're also big into music and would like a church that plays contemporary music with an edge. Thoughts? Help!

Christian Fellowship Church may be what you consider mega, but it really is a great place. Lots of contemporary music and we've met quite a few people even though it's not "small". Our experience here with small churches just hasn't been good and not because they're quirky.

Christian Fellowship teaches the Bible. So, you might want to visit. We are "good people". Just because it's large doesn't mean it's not full of good people.

You can also try Reston Bible, off of Cascades Pkwy. Perhaps slightly smaller than CFC on the "mega" scale, but sound biblical teaching. I play drums in their worship band, and we are always looking for new talent.

Community Church on Rt 7 is one to look into- it's big but I don't know if it's a mega church. we've enjoyed services there and their teen program has had a positive effect on our son.

So we didn't go anywhere this past Sunday, still unpacking. Just to be clear, I never said I didn't want a mega church because the people aren't nice... They're just hard to get connected in, that is in no way diminishes the great work mega churches do, but I would say typically for my family we do better in a non mega church. Despite that we'll probably still try christian fellowship. But being a bit quirky ourselves with a penchant for the off beat mega churches tend to appeal to the masses. Reston Bible had a good website and I hadn't heard of them before... I liked their leadership structure as it appears to be elder led, we'll be giving them a try too. The hard part about large/mega churches is things get really formal, as musicians we tend to see formal auditions and signed affidavits regarding our reasons for playing versus the, "Hey you play? Why don't you join us for practice and see how things go... Maybe hang out, jam, break bread..." Next thing you know everybody knows everyone and there is no need to formalize the process because we're friends. That being said church choices seem to be limited out here... Probably driven by the demographics, but hey thats life in the burbs.

Haven't heard The Community Church either... Loved the intro vid, Pastor Whitlow does the pastor bounce quite a bit. I guess we have some work to do and need to get out and start visiting. I'll post which church I visit and my thoughts.

Also take a looke at Cornerstone Chapel by Leesburg airport. We have attended there for 4 years and love it. The atmosphere is very laid back for a larger church. I love that every Sunday we have people in suits, ties and dresses, as well as jeans, shorts and t shirts. If you are still unpacking this Sunday, we stream our 10:15 service live, so you can see it/hear it before you go. The website is www.cornerstonechapel.net

We happen to go to Ashburn Presbyterian, but I have friends who attend Broadlands Community Church, and others who attend J10. J10 sounds like it might be right up your alley based on what I've heard. Again, I have no personal experience with it to share, however.

    Good luck!

limited? interesting, there are a ton of choices..it'll just take time to find the right fit. going in with a preconceived notion may make it tough... :) have fun on your search!

Our experience has been regardless of size, you will have to "audition" before they will let you play. Also, it's very common to at least ask about your faith, etc. The reasons have to do with making sure that there is no misrepresentation by someone.

Agreed. Tons of choices and preconceived notions aren't the way to find a good fit.

Reston Bible Church has local bible studies, small groups that are hosted by people who live in/around Ashburn. As for the music, I think they musicians are fantastic. I make sure never to be late, as I don't won't to miss this part of the service.

If you have kids the services for the small children is taught by a great person who really enjoys what his is doing. My daughter talks about him all the time. (His son is in my daughter's class)

The Jr. and Sr. High groups are also led by people who really enjoy teaching and helping the kids learn about Christ. Thet also have worships bands, my oldest son played guitar in the Jr. band and will play in the Sr. high band after football season ends. Also, they have all kinds of events for the teens for fellowship. They also have service projects they do a couple of times a year that help feed needy families with food, school supplies, etc.

    Here is the website:

We go to a small non denominational called Broadlands Community Church. I think it fits your description to some extent. I have always thought it was 'different' b/c our pastor, Wallace, teaches and talks the truth like I hadn't heard before. But quirky? I'm not sure... Maybe worth trying out. J10 would definitely be good to try as well. Hope you find something to your liking soon. Blessings!

we attend cornerstone chapel (next to the leesburg airport). have been very encouraged by the Bible teaching and worship, and were also able to get plugged in and meet people through their small groups.
