To: The Blonde Driver of the White Honda Odyssey Mini-Van that just blew through the stop sign at Chickacoan and Vestals Gap:

To clarify, you were driving down Chickacoan, blew through the Vestals Gap 4-way stop sign and continued on towards Broadlands Blvd at about 3:55PM today.

From: The lady with the two kids on bikes

Dear Driver of the white Honda Odyssey mini-van:

You may or may not live in this neighborhood and may not read this message, but just in case, I'm going to take a few minutes of my time to write it.

I'm not sure if you noticed or not, but my kids were patiently waiting on their bikes to cross the intersection. Thankfully, they had enough sense not to assume that you would stop before they continued on. I have taught them to wait for me before crossing and I was slow. I'm sure that your destination was really very important and that 3-5 seconds you would have lost by coming to a complete stop at the sign would have cost you dearly in some unimaginable way. It had to be really very important, because otherwise, I can't fathom while you would be so hurried to take a risk like that. Imagine the loss if you had hit one of my children, me or another car because of the inconvenience you would have suffered by arriving at your destination 3-5 seconds later.

This is a residential neighborhood. It's a beautiful day, kids are getting out of school, playing outside, people are walking their dogs and taking the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors.

Just a gentle reminder that just because you are in a hurry, does not excuse you from following the basic laws of the road. Fortunately, nothing bad happened as a result. This time.

In the future, please "waste" those seconds and stop. You (and someone else) may not be so lucky if you make the same choice next time.

    Sincerely,
    Your Charming Neighbor

Straight through - tapped the brakes in the middle of the intersection. Completely oblivious to anything or anyone around her.

Did she have a dog in her lap, while applying mascara and talking on her cell phone?

...or to get home after her mani/pedi because the nanny was sick yesterday so she has to get home to straighten up before the maids come.

Nothing wrong with having a nanny, maids, getting a mani-pedi, or even going to happy hour at Clyde's. The problem here is feeling the rules only apply to you when they're convenient to you, and that seems to cross all socioeconomic boundaries. I doubt people who get manicures are less likely follow traffic rules than people who don't....

    That's how stereotypes get cast.

No, but she did have another person in the car with her. It was hard to tell the age, since I was more concerned about my kids, but that's all I could observe in the few seconds.

    Actually, funny you say that:
    http://articles.latimes.com/2012/feb/27/science/la-sci-0228-greed-20120228

"People driving expensive cars were more likely than other motorists to cut off drivers and pedestrians at a four-way-stop intersection in the San Francisco Bay Area, UC Berkeley researchers observed. Those findings led to a series of experiments that revealed that people of higher socioeconomic status were also more likely to cheat to win a prize, take candy from children and say they would pocket extra change handed to them in error rather than give it back."

    Also...

"It turned out that people behind the wheels of the priciest cars were four times as likely as drivers of the least expensive cars to enter the intersection when they didn't have the right of way. The discrepancy was even greater when it came to a pedestrian trying to exercise a right of way."

Why is it that every time I post something, regardless of how I frame it, it always goes into a downward spiral of negativity? I wrote my original post in order to be informative, in case you knew someone who fit that description, whether it was yourself, your child, your spouse, etc to remind them how important it is to follow the rules of the road and the potential consequences. I was trying to be helpful. I also posted it as a reminder to my neighbors that we need to be extra cautious, even in a lovely, family-oriented neighborhood like Broadlands. It had absolutely nothing to do with expensive cars, manicures, pedicures or nannies. It was a safety concern, not a socio-economic one.

No matter how politely you do it, you essentially called someone out on a public forum. It's naturally going to bring out a bit of negativity. And I'm not sure I agree about this thread turning into "a downward spiral of negativity." The "mani/pedi" comment was likely made in a somewhat snarky way, and it just happened to remind me of an interesting/funny study I had read about a number of months back. Sure, it's a bit off-topic, but wasn't made in as negative of a way as you seem to have interpreted it.
