A “severed hand and foot of a primate” was found at a rendering facility in Louisiana.

The plant “processes animal by-products into meal-like substance which is used in the manufacture of animal feed.”

Reigel By-Products is described as “a chicken processing plant” in a lawsuit from 2007 (resulting from the death of an employee at the plant). The same legal document explains the plant “processes animal by-products into meal-like substance which is used in the manufacture of animal feed.”

So how did body parts of a primate end up at a chicken processing plant? Which animal feed manufacturers does Reigel By-Products sell to?

If the food you provide your pet contains ‘meal ingredients’ such as chicken meal, meat meal, by-product meal, or the ingredient animal fat – call the manufacturer and ask them for proof the meal or the fat is sourced solely from USDA inspected and approved meats. Ask them to provide their Pledge to Quality and Origin.

Without solid proof or their Pledge, rendered ingredients could contain the remains of just about any animal including 4D (dead, diseased, dying or disabled) animals. To learn more about the rendering industry, Click Here to read a 2004 report provided to Congress. http://http://www.nationalaglawcenter.org/assets/crs/RS21771.pdf

Agree. It is a unregulated industry and nowhere is it stated that euthanized dogs and cats are forbidden for use in commercial pet feed. It is protein afterall, but it is likely diseased tissue laden with antibiotics and vaccines.

"To avoid choosing a dog food that might contain dead cats and dogs, there’s only one way to minimize the risk…Never buy any product made with a generic animal ingredients. By generic, I’m referring to meat-based ingredients which do not specify the source animal. They use non-specific words like “meat” or “poultry” rather than the actual species like “chicken” or “beef”.

According to the pet food industry, meat can come from virtually any kind of mammal.

So, unlike beef meal which must come from beef, generic meat meal can be legally made from road kill, dead zoo animals or horses, or — even dead cats and dogs."

Here's the FDA's list of pet food recalls since 2007.

The industry is poorly regulated. After the melamine scare many consumers switched from commercial brand pet foods to "Whole, Natural, and/or Organic" brands believing the alternative is completely safe and that the ingredients always come from reliable sources, which is not always the case.

A number of "Natural" pet foods had humble beginnings only to be sold/acquired by large pet food mfgs. They kept the name because of brand recognition but altered the ingredients. Iams is a perfect example of this.

Another reputable merchant for pet food is Pet Valu on Sycolin Rd next to the new Harris Teeter. Nice store.
