My heart and prayers go out to the three little girls that were injured today. I hope they have a speedy recovery.

so hard not to feel complete disgust and anger at the logic (or lack of) that a Parent would think that a 15 yr old should get driving lessons in a residential area... wtf?

That poor kid that was driving is going to be psychologically damaged for life....

So where would you have them learn in this area since it is almost ALL residential? If they are going to be driving in a residential area, then teaching them in a residential area is crucial. Maybe they were driving back from a secluded area. Maybe it was her first time driving, maybe it was her 100th, you do not know. Why don't you let the parent of the driver decide what logic is best, just like we should let you decide.

FWIW, people with years of driving experience make the same mistake too. YMMV

Sorry my response was more emotionally driven than anything else and not meant to start a detailed debate about the right or wrong way to teach a child to drive or suggest I have a clue about how many times this child had driven before without a license.

But I will say this... there are a ton of places with plenty of room for a much safer teaching experience. I do not know any details about this child's experience. But I am willing to bet that that the parent's responsibility in this tragedy is not going to avoid the law or lawsuits. And I will let you know which secluded parking lot I choose for teaching my child in about 7 years.

If the child has a learners permit - is there any crime here besides the moving violations and subsequent liability tho?

I mean if the child has a learners and is driving within the constraints that permit requires.. and gets in an accident... how is that any different than a normal adult getting into an accident?

Well, watch out Broadlands.....I'm about to start training my third child to drive and most of it will be on Broadlands streets to start.

Just an FYI, I first learned in an empty office building parking lot, then once I had the hang of things we moved to the neighborhood, then the busy roads!

Now is not the time to judge. I'm sure the teen's parents are devastated enough already .

that is a good point that I am not knowledgeable with... the permit age in VA. I guess I did not even think that 15 was an age where you could have a permit in VA and drive on the road. I will have to look into that.... seems really young.

Personally, I would never do it with a kid just learning to drive... there are too many kids running into the streets around Broadlands.

I went through the licensing procedures within the last year or so with my daughter. They get their permit at 15 and 6 months, and have to do 45 hours of driving before they can do behind the wheel at school. They have to hold their permit at least 9 months before they can get their license.

i think the safe place to learn to drive is at the empty parking lot. or school parking lot during weekend. Nobody will be in that area anyway..

Yes, you start in a parking lot but eventually you have to drive on roads and neighborhood road are next because you can drive slowly on them. Yes it is dangerous but, everyone who drives started pretty much the same way. It is a risk society agrees to take.

The knee-jerk reaction to change laws and blame parents is somewhat understandable but we cannot always avoid accidents no matter what laws we pass.

I agree with STARTING in a parking lot. BUT, that is for the initial getting familiar with the operations of a vehicle, it is not going to teach someone how to "drive" in actual road conditions.

The Dulles North Bus depot is an excellent place to take a new driver for their orientation sessions. On weekends and holidays the parking lot is empty. Has stop signs at certain junctions, and plenty of space to get the feel for a car and it's mechanics.
