We did have a disclosure in our contract for a Southern Walk home. I don't remember the specifics. It gave me a bit of pause, but after living close to National and Andrews' flight patterns, we figured it would not be too bad. We had been out enough and hadn't noticed constant interrupting noise like I got living in Foggy Bottom years ago.

And yes, fog and clouds (and maybe cold weather?) makes noise worse. I definitely noticed this with the train tracks down the street from our old house.

denser air or clouds will give the sound something to bounce off of.. so when you have low clouds, etc.. noise will travel further, etc

I know Dulles is expanding its operations... so expect more noise... during day time I can barely notice it... it is the 11pm flight right above my house every night that gets me!

I think everyone needs to remember - the airport was here first. Not a huge surprise there would be noise from the airport. It isn't like it just popped up after you bought your house.

I live in brambleton. Airplanes are quite common as the approach for landing. Esp in the evening. You get use to it and you can hardly hear it, when you are indoors.

Yes, there was. We had to sign a form about it.

when I moved here we (broadlands N) weren't in the main flight path. they started scrambling departures more after 9/11, a quick left on takeoff. That said, I don't mind except the loud 11:30 pm that sometimes wakes me up.

I agree with the people that have said Helllowww what were you thinking when you moved near one of the fastest growing airports in the world if the noise is going to bother you. Like many have said the airport was here first. Yes there will be more and more noise as the airport expands and not very likely there will ever be a lot of restrictions for evening filghts, that is why they built it 30 miles from downtown in the first place.

The good news jets are getting quieter and quieter. I remember how loud those 707's were when I was a kid they could literally knock things off your shelves so we have it pretty good these days. Also I heard there was some f16s at dulles for awhile after 911 which can be extremely loud as are those russian jets which is what some of you may be hearing on occasion. The new planes today are extremely quiet compared to the good old days. The concorde was also very loud when it flew into dulles in the eighties but a beautiful sight to behold in the air.

I remember the COncord. I lived in Gaithersburg. I'd hear a really loud plane, but never see it. One day I saw it but heard it several minutes later. Evidently it started going supersonic somewhere over me in G'burg.

As long as you're not going to sleep at 7pm when all the international flights take off, you should be fine. That time in the afternoon, it's non-stop 747s, A340-400s, and all other heavy int'l flights...

There is the aforementioned 11:30pm flight, but I haven't heard it as much lately (maybe taking off on a different runway?) I've also heard a 4:30am every once in a while, but nothing to complain about.

One thing to remember, planes need to take off INTO the wind. If the wind is strong, and a particular direction, it will cause takeoff's, flight paths, approaches, and landings to turn certain directions. This could cause planes to fly more directy over the neighborhood.

the Concorde didn't go supersonic over land, and it wouldn't be several minutes later that you heard it... it is likely you heard 2 separate planes...

it was a beautiful plane, even into it's later years... I remember being in gym class in intermediate school and seeing it in the Dulles pattern.... pretty cool!!
