    Hi Everyone,
I think I have blown-in attic insulation right now, and the house is about 15 years old. I feel that I need a bit more insulation since the house gets really cold in the winter and hot in the summer very fast. Any recommendations and est. cost?

    Thanks
    Will

    Will,
I would check to see if a damper was installed by the builder. (Mine didn't and it had to be done a month after we moved in) If so, you can use this to control the flow of air upstairs/downstairs depending on the season. If the bulider didn't install one, check with your AC/Heating contractor and see if it makes sense to add one.

As for insulation since my builder screwed up my roof, they added more blown in insulation so I didn't have to add any with this house. I added R-30 insulation to the attice of my first house and it made a huge difference. As for cost each roll is around 20 dollars and should cover around 30 sq. feet. I would install it myself to keep my cost down.

In our attic, the builder only blew in a few inches, and didn't put any where you couldn't easily see. After years of huge heating bills in the winter and sauna-like summer sleeping conditions, I got up there and blew in a ton more insulation. It really made a huge difference.
If you're up for doing it yourself, I rented an AttiCat system from Home Depot. It's a two person job, one to feed the insulation into the machine, and the other to direct the hose up in the attic. We were done in 3 hours, and if I remember rightly, there's no rental charge on the machine if you buy 10 bags of insulation. I think we spent around $350. Just be careful not to blow any behind your soffit vent baffles, as that would block airflow up to the ridge vent.

We rented the blower from Lowes (free if you get x bundles) and my wife fed in the http://www.greenfiber.com/homeowners.html and I was up in the attic have fun blowing it on top of our existing fiberglass blown-in insulation. We probably added about 12" for ~$300-400 and it seems to have helped a bit.
