There are no sidewalks along Demott on either side. This makes access by foot to shopping and nature area somewhat precarious at times.

    Can this be remedied?

Doubt it. I brought it up during the annual HOA meeting. The side of the street along the nature preserve is owned by George Mason university. The question was deflected to the Loudon County Supervisor who was attending who gave me a lot of fluff about there being so many places around Loudon that dont have paths....blah blah blah. Please ask the HOA directly as I have done. More people bringing it up the better. :) If the community wants it maybe they can move forward at least on the other side of the street.

I am not 100% sure, but I am somewhat sure that the HOA has no say what-so-ever about that section of Demott. One side is own by GMU, and the other side is VDOT. I would not want to pay for a sidewalk that would be rarely used when one will be built "someday" when that section is developed.

George Mason University owns the east side of Demott, and they would have to build/approve a sidewalk on their property.
Now, the west side of Demott is owned by Van Metre's apartments and Van Metre's Shopping Center. Van Metre could build a sidewalk they wanted to. They don't want to.

decair, what did VanMetre tell you? I keep seeing people walking on Demott along that section. Even at night and wearing dark clothing. It is a curvy road. Just a matter of time before a tragedy occurs.

With the new Silver Line station going in just south of there, it would seem like Van Metre would be making a very smart business decision to install a sidewalk on the west side of Demott to make the Broadlands Apartments that much more accessible to the new station.

Hear that VanMetre? It's the sound of money in your pocket!!! You want to earn higher RENTS for your apartment units? Hmm??? Just put in a sidewalk running down to your shopping center at Mooreview and watch the average unit rental price SOAR as your apartments become hot properties that are walkable to the metro! I am sure the payoff period is far shorter than the expected lifespan of the sidewalk, so the rest would be pure profit! You have a fiduciary duty to your shareholders to maximize your profits. Well, I just gave you another way to do it! Now go make some coin and install that new sidewalk on Demott!!

I encourage others to contact Van Metre and the HOA. Hoya86 made a great comment.

Hoya86: To be walkable to the metro, doesn't Van Metre have until 2017 to install the sidewalks? I think you may want to find a different argument, like the safety argument that you started with.
