Mice, Rats, winter and Your Home…

One of the most common mistakes we come across in the pest control industry, is that mice and rats are just different sized versions of each other. Not only is this false, but the misconception can be quite disastrous when it comes to your home. The common House Mouse (Mus Musculus) is a curious, cute, affable and unfortunate carrier of disease. The larger and less adorable Norway Rat (Rattus norvegicus) is a mean, destructive, neophobic, germ-spreading machine that wreaks havoc wherever it goes. Knowing the conditions that are desirable to each can help you mitigate the chance of having to battle either.

A full-grown mouse usually weighs about .4 ounces and spends that majority of its day exploring and searching for food. It will eat virtually anything, but prefers seeds and grains. They are a staple in the food chain and virtually blind. These two elements combined make it a skittish creature that hides from its own shadow. They gather their entire fluid requirement from their food, and rarely ever actively drink. They are often described as harmless and adorable, and although this may be true in some ways, their presence can be dangerous and expensive. Besides being an extreme sanitation issue that can be quite expensive to properly rectify, their droppings and urine carry a plethora of pathogens, the worst of which is the dreaded Hanta Virus. Hanta Virus leads to a severe, sometimes fatal, respiratory disease.

Rats on the other hand can weigh upwards of a pound. They are extremely intelligent and aware of their surroundings. When something new is added to their environment they are very guarded against it, sometimes ignoring it for weeks. Despite their paranoia, they are very destructive and much more likely to destroy an area than a mouse. Unlike mice, they do need a water source, and require an ounce or so of water each day. They too are a common carrier of many pathogens and parasites

The best way to combat either intruder is to keep them outside and away from the home. Removing debris piles and picking up fallen nuts and fruits, as well as animal droppings, will help remove attractive food sources. Keeping the grass next to your home trimmed, and at least a 10-inch path behind all shrubs can help remove pathways and hiding places. If you’ve ever encountered rats, mice or any indication of either your best bet is to have a professional Pest management Professional give you an exclusion analysis.

If you have any additional questions about mice or rats, or about any other pests, please contact us at Moxie Pest Control, we will be more than happy to help.
