    There shouldn't be fees. If there is a shortfall, then either find efficiences in overall budget or raise taxes. I still can't believe that there has to be fundraisers to school playgrounds...

    It's because they are pretty sure the Parents will come up with the $$$... meaning the School Board doesn't!

    It is sad that society thinks this is ok. We all have a stake in a child's future, so we should all contribute.

    Since school attendance is mandatory they should pare back costs elsewhere.

    Just so everyone is clear, the fees would not be for buses to and from school during regular hours. It would be for after school activities and other special uses. By no means does this comment mean that I support that, though.

    I don't see where it says that anywhere. Can you provide a link? This is what I found that's a little more specific from Leesburg Today:

    "The board voted 7-2 to support legislation allowing school boards to charge fees for transportation to and from school and for extracurricular activities, as well as to rent out buses to non-public schools."

    Here's a portion of what Debbie Rose had to say about this on her facebook page (I added the bold font for emphasis);

    "I know the headlines are sensational, but charges for regular bus service to and from school are NOT imminent. Let me just quickly offer a few bits of information:
    1) The proposal is to ask our state legislators to advocate for changes in VA law that would give the local school boards authority to charge for any transportation services.
    2) I voted in support of this proposal for two reasons- one, I support local control; and two the proposal includes what our counsel determines is a necessary fix to allow private schools in our county to pay to use LCPS buses for things like field trips. The School Board counsel believes that the law is not clear on this point and that LCPS, therefore, can't offer this to private schools. This issue has been raised in my community and I voted to support finding a means to allow them to use LCPS buses.
    3) The proposal also would allow LCPS to charge for bus service as part of an adoption of full-day kindergarten. I think that has to be on the table as an option because the cost to fully implement full-day K is over $50 million. This could be a way for LCPS to offer full-day K to those who want it (that is key- to those who want to send their kids to full-day K) at a reasonable cost to the parent. I'm not actually taking a position, just advocating that the local school board should have the authority to decide how best to serve the needs of its students."

    Here's a link to her page with her full explanation of the request;

    So, while charging for transportation to and from school may not be imminent, it is a possibility if these legislative changes are made and the school board then decides it's necessary.

    PowerPlay, you're right. I don't know where I read that or got that impression but I was wrong. Ridiculous idea.

    I'm guessing that was sarcasm and my statement was not a criticism, but rather I was not able to find that information anywhere and I was hoping for more information since all the news outlets have generalized the report.

    I think that it's important to note that, while the school board says that the fees won't be imposed for transportation to and from school at this time, the legislation they're advocating for doesn't rule out transportation fees for students going to and from school, whether it be for full time kindergarten or for other students. I think we can look forward to transportation fees in the future if this legislation is approved.
