So a couple of weeks ago, I was getting gas at the Goose Creek Sunoco, and the guy at the pump across from me was complaining that the pump had overcharged him and the gas station manager didn't believe him and wasn't going to do anything about it.

Today, I got to experience it first hand. I swiped my card. I pressed the far left regular unleaded button, and the bright blue light lit up on that regular unleaded button. I was all excited that the gas was only $2.179 per gallon.

When the pump clicked off and I put the handle back on the holder, I looked at the price and said to myself, "That isn't right." $35.77 for 13.353 gallons? The quick math in my head told me they charged me a lot more than $2.179 per gallon. I broke out the calculator on my phone and figured out it charged me $2.679 which is their advertised price for their Ultra 93 supreme unleaded.

I went inside and complained to the attendant and he told the manager. The manager looked at the computer and said that according to the computer I filled up with Ultra 93 supreme unleaded, so I was charged the correct amount and there was nothing he could do for me.

Has anyone else experienced this? I probably wouldn't have brought it up if it weren't for hearing someone else complain about it a couple of weeks ago. In that case, he was at the far left pump. In today's case, I was at the far right pump, so it's not limited to one pump doing it.

I reported the issue to VA Weights and Measures. The inspector called me and said they receive many complaints about that particular model of gas pump, not just at that gas station but all across NoVA. He said it has to do with the way the buttons are positioned relative to the hose, and if your car's gas connection isn't forward of the hose, you swipe your card, you push the button for the gas you want, and when you turn to put the pump handle in your car, the hose hits the supreme unleaded button on the far right. He said even if you notice it and hit the regular unleaded button, it will stay on supreme unleaded unless you completely cancel the transaction and start over again.

So make sure you pull far enough forward that your gas connection is forward of the pump and the hose won't hit the buttons, and if you accidentally hit the super button, completely cancel the transaction and start over.
